Celebrating the hotly debuted hotel W Beijing – Chang’an, W Hotels Worldwide unveiled its “Beijing Chang’an: Rock the Empire Global Tour” featuring a larger than life birdcage that played host to a dazzling, East-meets-West evening of cabaret curated by Dita Von Teese, cocktails and Afternoon Tea Set.
Right after W New York – Downtown, W London – Leicester Square and W San Francisco, the W Beijing: Rock The Empire tour landed in W Hong Kong on March 31, transforming WOOBAR into a bastion of Beijing glamour with an arsenal of gilded décor. Created with New York-based interior design firm Nema Workshop, the centerpiece is a golden 3.5 meter-tall birdcage, which is inspired by China’s multi-century love affair with bird keeping, an art form that has been passed down from the royal and noble to the everyday citizen. The Rock the Empire birdcage exudes the essence of W Beijing, artfully juxtaposing a Ming vase-shaped interior with glossy Chinese landscape patterns.
As part of the installation, Dita von Teese has collaborated with W to curate a routine inspired by the Birdcage. Known as ‘The Burlesque Superheroine’, Von Teese represents the biggest name in burlesque since Gypsy Rose Lee and is credited with bringing the art form back into the spotlight with a new sense of elegance and sophistication. At W Hong Kong’s Rock the Empire party, MEDIANOCHE, one of the top 50 burlesque performers in the world, was handpicked by von Teese to showcase the routine on her behalf, pushing the entire event’s atmosphere to the climax. Local indie band Ni.Ne.Mo and DJ Miss Yellow pumped up the surroundings as well.
To amplify the experience, W Hotels bring Beijing metropolitan flair to each stop with W Beijing’s cocktails and cuisine. For W Hong Kong, WOOBAR has an Afternoon Tea Promotion inspired by Beijing from the start of April to the end of May, with over 10 types of desserts tantalizing your taste buds. Culinary Director Chef Alain Allaire brings innovation to the fore. He uses not only luxurious ingredients such as foie gras and Boston lobster to inject a sense of royal flair, but also Chinese colors like red and gold, Eastern cuisines and succulent fruits, creating the perfect blend of 2 cultures in taste and in look.
Take the “Golden Peking Duck Brioche” as an example. The wonderful mix of black beans and hoisin sauce accentuates the freshness of the meat. Together with a few refreshing slices of cucumbers, a superb sensation is produced. Food lovers can also have a taste of W Beijing with its “W Beijing Pork Neck Brioche” available on the tea set. The sour taste of the plum sauce serves as an appetizing contrast to the fruity flavor of pineapples. By adding in potatoes, the treat becomes more heavenly and well-balanced.
As for the sweets, the “Rock the Empire Crunchy” is a must-try. The combination of sweet chocolates and fragrant Japanese citrus Yuzu leaves a satisfying and uplifting taste. The piece of “Rock the Empire” white chocolate on top acts as the perfect final touch to this dessert. On the other hand, the “W Red Fortune Cookies” appeals to the senses of sight and taste with its stunning red appearance and crispy texture respectively, giving gourmands a delicious surprise.
Other recommendations include “Red Velvet Blueberry cake”, “Kalamancie Coconut Tart”, “Raspberry Green Tea Panna Cotta”, “Black Sesame Macaroon”, “Asparagus and Mushroom Vegetarian Spring Rolls with Sweet Chili Sauce”, “Boston Lobster with Sweet & Sour Kumquat and Sesame Cone”, “Beijing Cold
Noodles with Crab Roe, Sesame And Ginger”, “Free Range Soya-Spicy Chicken & Foie Gras Cone” and more. Other than savories, guests can savor the Jing cocktail, W Beijing’s iconic concoction that fuses Asian flavors with Western flair.
The tea set and cocktail will be available from April 2 to May 31, 2015. In addition to W Hong Kong, W Beijing Chang’an: Rock the Empire Global Tour has stops in W New York – Downtown, W London – Leicester Square, W San Francisco, W Singapore – Sentosa Cove and W Hong Kong. The tour will culminate with a grand finale at the premiere of W Beijing – Chang’an with a dazzling haute couture performance by Dita Von Teese herself.
