Watch berserk man shout ‘There’s a bomb on the plane!’

November 27, 2013 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Weird behaviour and bizarre outbursts by airline passengers around the world are reported frequently, but the chances of such things happening on your flight are, thankfully, small.

Viewing such behaviour on video is the closest most people come to it, which is just as well. One such video emerged last weekend, thanks to a passenger who placed on YouTube a clip he filmed of police arresting a fellow passenger after the man went berserk in flight and started screaming bomb threats.

“There’s a bomb on the plane!” the apparently deranged man can be seen yelling just after the Southwest Airlines jet on which he is travelling lands at Atlanta airport in the US state of Georgia.

The plane had flown from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Two Atlanta police officers met the flight after it touched down.

A female officer is seen talking to the suspect in subdued tones when suddenly the man erupts in a shouted threat to passengers: “If she takes me off, I’ll blow the f*****g plane up.” The man rants again about a bomb as the police officer, assisted by large colleague who wears a black hood throughout, escorts the man down the aisle and out of the aircraft.

As well as raving about a bomb, the man’s bizarre in-flight behaviour extended to throwing things at fellow travellers, reportedly including money.

After the man is taken off the plane in the video, a flight attendant asks everyone to remain seated with their seatbelts fastened.

The pilot comes on the public address system, thanks passengers for their cooperation and apologises for the incident.

Passengers can be heard calling “sit down” after the man’s outburst and infants start  crying. The mood relaxes after the man is removed. Passengers talk light-heartedly, even laugh.

The clip, shot by a passenger on board, can be viewed here – but note, the man uses a bit of bad language:

The ranting man, who was not named, has since been admitted to a clinic for psychiatric evaluation, the New York Daily News reported. Unsurprisingly, he is suspected to be suffering from a mental illness.

As smartphone use spreads, more instances of grotesque and oddball in-flight conduct are bound to be filmed. The last outrageous behaviour by an airline passenger to hit the video screens was last month, when a bald-headed, middle-aged, burly, tattooed drunk flew into Manchester Airport on easyJet, stripped all his clothes off, urinated in public view and then challenged the plane’s captain to a naked fist fight on the tarmac before being tasered by police.

A video of that was placed on the Manchester Evening News website.

“Air travel was never meant to be like this,” a viewer observed. The same could be said of the Atlanta incident.
