Gold Coast locals and visitors have their chance to be an ‘athlete’ in a beach race called Water Cooler Games that will take place at Broadbeach beach this Sunday as part of Festival 2018, the arts and culture program of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).https://www.travelcounsellors.com.au/au/leisure

Inspired by the Monday morning sports chat around the office water cooler, participants will be suited up, briefcase and mobile phones in-hand, to race along the beach before being presented with a gold medallion by Deputy Mayor Councillor Donna Gates.

TV personality Liz Cantor will MC the race that will also be photographed by globally renowned Australian surrealist artist Andrew Baines who turns his photos into paintings after the event.

Other local participants in the race will include Councillors Hermann Vorster representing Division 11, and Corey Wingard MP, representing Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, Ms Criena Gehrke, Director of HOTA and Mr Steve Cornelius, Club President and Swim Coach at Gold Coast Masters Swimming Club.

Festival 2018 Gold Coast Co-Creative Director Kate Fell says Water Cooler Games will give viewers an “amusing surprise.”

“Andrew Baines is one of those artists who creates incredibly fun work that is inspiring on many levels – from his ability to create these zany photoshoots to his commentary on the slavery of office cubicles and corporate culture.

“Andrew’s work brings a taste of the unexpected to Festival 2018; a mass of suits racing along the beach is not what you expect to see on a typical day,” Ms Fell said.

Famous for his trademark surrealist style, Baines puts politicians, orchestras, cows, Hills Hoists, dachshunds and masses of suited volunteers in the sea for photoshoots.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is just one of a handful of politicians to have participated in Baines’ human sculptures by the sea.

Water Cooler Games takes place on the beach at Chelsea Avenue, Broadbeach, 11am Sunday 8 April.
