Ways to save on travel this year

With the Summer holidays nearing an end and the start of the new year in full swing, many people are dreaming of future vacations. With most people returning to work and in need of something fun to look forward to, this is one of the busiest times to book travel. According to Cashrewards, already in the past month Australian consumers have spent over $450 million online on travel alone and are predicted to spend $7.5 billion on travel for the rest of the year.

Lorica Clarke, shopping expert, world traveller and co-founder of Cashrewards, loves a great holiday and has travelled to many exotic locations all over the world. Lorica knows how savvy consumers need to be to find a great deal on holidays and wants to share her tips on how to save on travel this year. Her tips include:

  • Book at the right time for the right time

To get the best deals you need to know when and where to look. February is the best time to buy early bird Europe tickets for the latter part of the season. However, if you would prefer a holiday in the US – the cheapest time to go is November so book your flights around April for the best deals. Make sure when booking that your travel dates are flexible and you avoid school holidays (if possible). This will ensure cheaper flights and more availability on those flights so you can occupy more than one seat on a long flight.

  • Plan ahead – the earlier you buy the more you save

If you’re going to be travelling domestically book 6 months in advance to save on flights and accommodation. If you’re traveling internationally book 12 months in advance. Most airlines increase their prices closer to departure date to secure those last-minute flyers that will pay any price. Avoid this and book early before the cheaper flights or accommodation sell out.

  • Buy online

Everyone knows that online stores always offer the best discounts and sales, not to mention most Travel Agents take a commission from you when you book a holiday. Cut out the middle-man and book online. There will always be travel sales but if you’re looking for extra savings go to a cashback website. Pop onto and it will put cash back into your account, giving you savings on top of the travel brand’s discounts. Starting your online shopping by going through is the cheapest way to buy online in Australia. Through Cashrewards you can purchase not only hotels and flights but luggage, resort wear, carparking at the airport, tours and activities, car hire, foreign currency and more with all the major travel brands such as Expedia, Virgin, Emirates, Travelex, Wotif, Accor, etc etc  – it’s a one stop shop for all things travel and the smart way to save on everything you buy.

  • Choose the best value destination for your budget

Travelers are starting the year with the Australian dollar strengthening to become the best performing major currency in the world. The AUD has risen considerably in the last 12 months against the following currencies; UK, Malaysia, China, Argentina, Philippines, India, Norway, Hungary, Denmark and Vietnam to name a few.

Head over to the UK where the currency, due to the Brexit vote, is working favourably and has made it the best time in 20 years for Australians to travel to Britain. Right now there are so many destinations in South East Asia, the sub-continent or South America that are great value as well as really exciting destinations. Not only is the exchange rate great but the cost of living is significantly lower than in Australia so your dollar will go much, much further.

  • Package it up

When purchasing flights and accommodation separately, it can become quite expensive. Try buying package deals that can save you a lot of money in the end. Most of the travel websites will offer this online as well as travel agents.
