WCCM2022 to be held in Yokohama, drawing around 3500 scholars.

We are excited to report that Yokohama has been chosen as the host city for the 15th World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM). At the 13th WCCM, which took place this year in New York from July 22nd through 27th, it was officially announced that the new PACIFICO YOKOHAMA NORTH facility would be the venue for the 2022 conference.

This is the second time for the congress to be held in Japan. It was previously held in Chiba in 1994. About 3500 researchers and experts in the fields of computational engineering and computational mechanics from around the globe are expected to participate. Of those, roughly 2,000 will be coming from abroad.

To help promote Japan as a venue, the former president of JSCES (The Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science), Prof. Kenjiro Terada (Tohoku University, International Research Institute of Disaster Science) was officially appointed as a “MICE Ambassador” by JNTO in March of 2017. Prof. Seiichi Koshizuka (University of Tokyo, School of Engineering, Department of Systems Innovation) was elected as chairperson for the WCCM2022.

In cooperation with JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) and the Japan Tourism Agency, YCVB (Yokohama Convention & Visitors Bureau), the city of Yokohama and PACIFICO Yokohama worked in unison to successfully convince the organizations responsible for making the decision–JSCES and JACM (Japan Association for Computational Mechanics)–that Yokohama was the optimal choice.

The local organizing committee established “Pursuing the Infinite Potential of Computational Mechanics” as its vision statement. The committee members see this field as one that transcends the scope of traditional engineering disciplines by exploring the potential of new concepts and technologies to address societal needs. Additionally, they have proposed an initiative to train the next generation of students. The wealth of academic achievements and enthusiasm of the professors on this committee were key factors in the choice of Yokohama as host.
