WEGO Travel Industry Snapshot: Indonesia

Indonesia’s rapidly growing tourism landscape is being propelled at breakneck speed thanks to familiar local brands, local payment options and a greater inventory, according to an industry snapshot revealed today by Wego, the leading travel metasearch site in the Asia Pacific and Middle East.

“More Indonesian travel companies are recognising the trusted relationship that Wego has built with travellers in this country,” said Graham Hills, Managing Director of Wego Indonesia. “While Wego’s inventory includes diverse travel options globally, the continuing build of local content featuring familiar Indonesian brands resonates very effectively with our market.”

Wego Indonesia continues to build strong local partnerships with agreements in place that include seven high-profile travel businesses – Tiket.com, Ticktab.com, PegiPegi.com, Hoterip.com, Tiket2.com, Gonla.com (coming soon) as well as international hotel chain Swiss Belhotel.

Airlines too are appreciating Indonesia’s online growth including Malindo Air (owned by Indonesian Lion Air), Malaysia’s premium but budget priced carrier, who just signed a partnership agreement with Wego.

“Malindo Air have advised of plans to fly into Bali, Jakarta and six other major Indonesian hubs from their base in Kuala Lumpur,” said Dean Wicks, Chief Flights Officer for Wego. “Middle Eastern carriers Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad and Saudi are also increasing their flight frequency to the country. It’s clear to all that as both a source and feed destination Indonesia is leaping ahead.”

Currently Wego’s accommodation inventory in Indonesia consists of 10,720 properties, a number that is consistently growing. In the last six months a total of 797 unique flight route searches were performed, with booking leads valued at US$28.5 million, increasing 7.1 per cent on the same period last year.

“New providers are offering local payment options such as bank transfers and internet banking which has historically impacted the business given the low credit card penetration,” added Hills. “Wego Indonesia has been a valuable source for the country given our expansive global audience reach. Having said that the quantity of domestic bookings is significant and outbound searches are up 90 per cent.”
