Weird cossies, but Markle makes travel bookings sparkle

May 16, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Royal wedding fever is building, with some extraordinary wedding-themed swimwear raising eyebrows as new research indicates Australia ranks fourth among markets worldwide booking accommodation near Windsor to be on scene for the wedding.

Windsor, on the outskirts of London, is where Prince Harry will wed Meghan Markle on Saturday.

Then there’s the swimwear. It’s by Bags of Love, an online printing service, which is using photos of the couple on personalised swimming cossies. Is it wow, meh or ouch? Who will be first to wear one at your local beach or pool?

In the UK, public opinion surveys indicate popular support is swinging behind Markle. Her mixed-race background is cited as being in tune with modern Britain.

Experts estimate the wedding will benefit Britain to the tune of GBP 500 million (about AUD 885 million), as thousands flock to the environs of St George’s Chapel in Windsor this Saturday, 19 May 2019, where the couple will tie the knot. A TV audience of millions will watch around the world.

Online travel booking platform Agoda reports a 40% increase on accommodation bookings in Windsor, as well as neighbouring Slough and Greater London.

The Prince Harry cossie – very tasteful

Nine out of the 15 top international markets and most of overall bookings (43%) come from the Asia-Pacific region. South Korea (#2), Hong Kong (#3) and Australia (#4) make up the most enthusiastic royal wedding markets in the region.

Unsurprisingly, given that the bride is American, many guests travelling to the Windsor and Greater London area in time for the royal wedding hail from the US (#1).

Here are Agoda’s top 15 inbound markets to the region (Windsor, Slough and Greater London) during the Royal Wedding:

  1. USA
  2. South Korea
  3. Hong Kong
  4. Australia
  5. Singapore
  6. Taiwan
  7. France
  8. China
  9. Germany
  10. Philippines
  11. India
  12. Israel
  13. Sweden
  14. Thailand
  15. Canada

Agoda compiled the rankings by comparing accommodation booking data for 18 May 2017 and 18 May 2018 across properties in Windsor, Slough and Greater London.
