West Side Story on Sydney Harbour is now open, with rapturous reviews and surging ticket sales set to make this the most successful Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour event to date. Having already broken box office records, West Side Story is the fastest selling show in the event’s eight year history and has now been lauded as one of the best Harbour productions to date.

Opening to widespread critical acclaim, rapturous applause, standing ovations, and an unbeatable energy and vitality from both performers and audience alike on Opening Night, the buzz around West Side Story on Sydney Harbour continues to grow. With only 22 performances left of the exclusive four-week season, and many performances already close to being sold out, West Side Story on Sydney Harbour has become the hottest ticket in town. Opera Australia CEO Rory Jeffes is delighted with the success of the production. “We are proud to be bringing another exceptional new production to the Harbour for audiences, both domestic and international, to enjoy. The response has been incredible, with ticket sales for West Side Story the strongest we’ve ever seen.”

Lyndon Terracini, OA’s Artistic Director is thrilled with the audience response. “We knew we had a hit on our hands, with the creative team that we pulled together along with an exceptionally talented and hardworking cast and orchestra, it’s magnificent to receive such an overwhelmingly positive response” he said. The event’s major benefactor Dr Haruhisa Handa congratulated Opera Australia on behalf of his International Foundation for Arts and Culture. “It has been incredibly satisfying to hear about the reception this production has received. So many people enjoying such a wonderful production with some of the finest singers, dancers and musicians in the world on this magnificent stage, all with an incredible backdrop of Sydney Harbour. I am so proud and I congratulate Lyndon Terracini and his amazing team,” said Dr Handa. Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said the production is an incredibly unique opportunity to enjoy one of the world’s best outdoor operas. “Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is one of NSW’s great major event success stories; attracting thousands of visitors from all around the globe every year.

This year’s production of West Side Story really is the ultimate show, with fantastic music, singing, dancing, costumes, sets and fireworks carefully woven together to tell a powerful story, which all takes place in the midst of the spectacular Sydney Harbour. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour really is an unbeatable experience that the NSW Government via Destination NSW is proud to support for the eighth year,” Ms Chipchase said. With the Sydney city skyline offering an unbeatable live backdrop and a world class performing company unleashing this slice of New York City on Sydney Harbour, West Side Story has seen the strongest uptake at the box office to date. Now in its eighth year, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is internationally renowned and recognised as a highlight of the Australian cultural calendar, drawing visitors from around Australia and from overseas. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW and Dr Haruhisa Handa through the International Foundation for Arts and Culture.
