What do you do when your plane crashes? Take a selfie!

egtmedia59When a US Airways jet crashed on takeoff at the end of a runway at Philadelphia International Airport, one young passenger whipped out her phone and filmed her panicked sprint from the stricken plane.

This is the age of the selfie, so Hannah Udren gave a breathless commentary after turning her phone around to get herself in the shot.

“I’m off the plane,” Udren can be heard saying in the clip.

“We are evacuating the plane. Oh my god, the plane is on fire, oh my god.Twitterpic shows US Airways Flight 1702 being evacuated

“Oh my god my plane, my plane just crashed.”

Moments later Udren tweeted “So my plane just crashed…” and posted a photo of herself with the plane in the background.

US Airways Flight 1702, an Airbus A320, didn’t in fact catch fire. It had just lifted off, heading to Fort Lauderdale in Florida, when the pilot was forced to abort take-off just after the plane was airborne, CBS reported. The nose wheel collapsed when the pilot tried to land the plane again and the flight, carrying 149 passengers and five crew, needed to be evacuated quickly using the emergency slides.

One passenger requested medical help after the crash but no serious injuries were reported, an airport spokeswoman said.

Udren’s dramatic selfie clip, posted on YouTube and on various online media, swiftly went viral and was soon provoking more comment than the crash itself.

There was quite a backlash, with some critics saying Udren should have turned around and taken a POV (point of view) shot of the plane and its evacuation, rather than a continuous running selfie.

That’s easy to say when you weren’t on the plane. Who knows how you react in the heat of the moment? Udren’s selfie gets the adrenaline-laced feel of the evacuation across vividly. It also let her film while she was running away to put as much distance between herself and the plane as she could.

She had the presence of mind to record the scene and her clip shows graphically that she survived OK, as did everyone else, luckily.
