2018 Qantas Business Travel Awards

Winners of the 2018 Qantas Business Travel Awards have been announced. The Best Conference Venue went to ICC Sydney which boasts Australia’s biggest ballroom and exhibition space. The Best New Business Hotel was awarded to The Intercontinental Perth City Centre whilst the Best New or Improved Corporate Retreat went to Elements of Byron on the New South Wales coast. Melbourne’s Vue De Monde took out the Best Private Dining Room which is the realisation of chef Shannon Bennett’s vision.

W Sydney announced

W Hotels Worldwide has announced Sydney as the third Australian city to welcome one of its luxury hotels. Located in Darling Harbour, the new hotel is due for completion by 2020 and will feature 593 guest rooms, suites and serviced apartments. Guests will enjoy the brand’s iconic pool deck, restaurant, two bars, spa, gym and 925 square metres of event space including a grand ballroom.

Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour commences AUD 15 million room upgrade

Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour has commenced an AUD 15 million room refresh across each of the hotel’s 525 guest rooms. There will be five room types with views of Darling Harbour and Sydney’s skyline.

International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) has welcomed new Executive Pastry Chef, Jerry Lagudas. With more than 20 years’ experience, Lagudas has joined ICC Sydney’s culinary team to lead eight pastry chefs and apprentices.

New James Squire Brewhouse opens on Sydney’s Circular Quay

Australian brewer James Squire has opened a new brewhouse at Sydney’s Circular Quay.  Featuring four event spaces for 40 to 450 guests, The Squire’s Landing houses a microbrewery and boasts views of iconic Sydney landmarks.

Novotel Geelong announces multi-million dollar upgrade

All 109 rooms at Novotel Geelong will be upgraded as part of an AUD 3.5 million renovation. Just over one hour from Melbourne’s city centre, the renovated Novotel is due for completion in October 2018.

New resort set for Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula

The new RACV Cape Schanck Resort boasts the largest conference and event facilities on the Mornington Peninsula – just one and a half hours drive from Melbourne city centre. Catering for events for up to 450 guests, the resort has three restaurants and 180-degree coastal views.

Major Gold Coast development to add to city’s event offering

A major Gold Coast infrastructure project, The Jewel, is set to considerably add to the city’s event and accommodation offering. The AUD 1 billion complex will feature a five-star hotel, bars, dining options and conference facilities. A 700 square metre ballroom will cater for up to 800 guests and will boast a three metre ceiling height and separate smaller function rooms. The complex will also include a 633 square metre business centre with five meeting rooms of varying sizes. The project is due to be completed by mid 2019.

The Calile Hotel Brisbane announces meeting and conference spaces

Opening in September 2018, The Calile Hotel on Brisbane city’s James Street precinct will offer event spaces for up to 500 guests. Facilities will include two private function rooms that can be divided into four smaller rooms, a poolside restaurant and bar and a rooftop terrace. The hotel has 175 guest rooms and high-end retail fashion on the street level.

Brisbane’s newest ballroom space opens at Emporium Hotel

The new Emporium Hotel in Brisbane’s South Bank precinct, offers a pillarless ballroom amongst its event spaces. The ‘Frangipani Ballroom’ offers 410 square metres of space with a cocktail capacity of 400 and a banquet capacity of 260. Operable walls allow for smaller configurations of anywhere between 150 and 300 for cocktail events, and from 80 to 170 for banquet events.

Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) to launch first ‘voco’ hotel outside of Europe

IHG’s first signing for the voco brand outside of Europe will be the Watermark Hotel & Spa Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise. The 388 room hotel is due to open under the voco flag in late 2018.

Tasmania

Peppers Silo Hotel opens in Tasmania

Originally erected in 1960, Launceston’s Kings Wharf grain silos have been transformed into a new 108 guest room Peppers Hotel.  Fifty two of the guestrooms are inside the former silo barrels. In addition, there are conference facilities for up to 500 guests, a day spa, cocktail bar with water views and an onsite restaurant focusing on local produce.
