What’s on in Western Australia

Visitors to WA can experience WA’s natural beauty, state-of-the-art venues and diverse culture in unique and unforgettable ways through an incredible range of world-class cultural, sporting and culinary events.

Here is a snapshot of events that will be held across the State between July and December 2017 (please find a more detailed event calendar attached).

  • A Taste of Broome – July 20, August 17 and September 6 | Broome | Australia’s North West
    The Kimberley pearling town of Broome comes to life during this multi-arts, culinary and cultural festival that celebrates the area’s rich Indigenous heritage and diverse cultures. Immerse your senses in food, dance, tradition, culture, music, film and a unique atmosphere as the 2017 event marks 75 years since World War Two attacks in the area and 50 years since the 1967 referendum on Aboriginal people.

  • CinefestOZ – August 23-27 | Busselton and surrounds | Australia’s South West
    Australia’s premier destination film festival unites cinema stars, top screen industry professionals and thousands of film lovers in the spectacular surroundings of WA’s South West. Now in its 10th year, the festival includes Australia’s richest annual film prize and the chance to see extraordinary new works.
  • National Ballooning Championships – September 2-9 | Northam | Experience Perth
    The protected and picturesque Avon Valley, just east of Perth, is considered WA’s top spot for hot air ballooning. During the national championships, up to 30 colourful balloons launch from the historic town of Northam, creating a breathtaking spectacle above the farmland as competitors show off their skills.
  • Shinju Matsuri – September 2-10 | Broome | Australia’s North West
    Darren Robertson of Three Blue Ducks and guest judge on My Kitchen Rules has been announced as the headline chef for Shinju Matsuri 2017. The ‘festival of the pearl’ is a vibrant celebration of Broome’s proud multicultural and pearling history, and features a stellar line-up of unique events, such as Sunset Long Table at Cable Beach and A View to Asia Exhibition.
  • Rugby League World Cup – November 12 | Perth | Experience Perth
    Perth will be a Rugby League World Cup host city for the first time when a double-header clash – Wales v Ireland followed by England v France – lights up nib Stadium. Celebrate the end of the pool rounds with Europe’s best battling it out for a spot in the finals of international rugby league’s pinnacle event.
  • Margaret River Gourmet Escape presented by Audi – November 16-19 | Margaret River Region | Australia’s South West
    Nigella Lawson, Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White are just some of the big names who’ve made a beeline to the famed Margaret River wine region for Gourmet Escape. The ultimate culinary adventure brings together the world’s best food and wine experts for a unique weekend of satellite and fringe events including beach barbecues, long-table lunches, sundowners, Q&A sessions and more, surrounded by spectacular coastal, forest and rural scenery.
  • Telstra Perth Fashion Festival – Swim and Resort Series – November | Fremantle | Experience Perth
    Following the runway extravaganza of Telstra Perth Fashion Festival’s main program in September, the spotlight turns to the coast for the Swim and Resort Series in November. The temperature will rise with dazzling local talent and breathtaking creations as the hottest swimwear and resort looks are revealed against the backdrop of Perth’s spectacular Indian Ocean coast.
  • Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton – December 2-3 | Rottnest to Fremantle | Experience Perth
    Dazzling colour and astonishing speed will thrill spectators and competitors on Perth’s coast during the southern hemisphere’s top kiteboarding race. With the Indian Ocean providing ideal conditions, 135 participants will take on the 19 kilometre challenge from Rottnest Island to Fremantle, aiming to beat the Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton record time of 22 minutes.
  • SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton – December 3 | Busselton | Australia’s South West
    One of only three Australian events on the global IRONMAN circuit, the SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia is celebrated for its scenic course through the South West city of Busselton, where local and international competitors often achieve personal-best times. After a power swim around the iconic Busselton Jetty, athletes cycle through picturesque tuart forests and run along the rugged coastline. The popular shorter-distance 70.3 race takes place alongside the main triathlon.
  • Mastercard Hopman Cup – December 30 to January 6 | Perth
    One of the world’s greatest tennis players, Roger Federer, will return to Australia’s sunniest capital city in December to compete in the Mastercard Hopman Cup 2018. The 18-time Grand Slam champion will represent Switzerland for the fourth time at the mixed teams tournament in Perth, which runs from December 30 to January 6. Earlier this year, 103,167 fans flocked to Perth Arena to watch one of the most successful events in the tournament’s history. Federer went on to win this year’s Australian Open following his appearance at the tournament. He will once again be joined by Swiss player Belinda Bencic. The full player line-up will be announced in October.

Due to open in early-2018, the 60,000-seat Perth Stadium will enable WA to host more major events. Below is a taste of what’s to come at the world-class venue:

  • Chelsea Football Club (July or August 2018) – In an Australian exclusive, the Premier League powerhouse will take on local heroes Perth Glory.
  • Bledisloe Cup (August 2019) – The only time the Australian Wallabies and New Zealand All Blacks teams will play on Australian soil in 2019 in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup.
  • Rugby League State of Origin (2019) – Regarded as Australia’s biggest annual sporting event, the New South Wales Blues clash with the Queensland Maroons in a fiercely contested game that will attract thousands of visitors, particularly from interstate.
