When romance goes awry – the most unusual romance related travel claims

February 14, 2018 Insurance No Comments Email Email
Nothing conjures up the idea of romance like an idyllic getaway overseas – cocktails at sunset and long walks on the beach. Unfortunately, even romantic trips can go expectedly awry!

Allianz Global Assistance has compiled some of the most unusual romance related travel insurance claims from Aussie tourists (some covered and some not) over the past year:
  • Kiss and swell: For one traveller, a romantic skiing holiday abroad resulted in a visit to the emergency department. After tripping and fracturing her wrist, her hand had swollen to the point where she could not remove her wedding rings! Sadly, she had no other choice but to have her precious rings cut off. There’s nothing romantic about that!
  • Jilted with nowhere to go: Being stood up at the altar would be a nightmare for many of us. Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to one poor groom who was then hoping to re-claim his lost costs after he’d booked a romantic honeymoon overseas, only to be jilted by his bride-to-be. Let’s hope he finds love again soon!
  • A little (ring) fling: One woman made a claim after a family cruise left her without her engagement ring. After taking her ring off to have a shower, her mischievous son picked up her engagement ring and danced around with it on his finger. Unfortunately, he moved his hand too quickly and the ring flew straight into the open toilet! Panicking about getting into LOTS of trouble, he flushed the toilet to hide the evidence…and the engagement ring was never to be seen again.
  • A honeymoon in hospital: A newly married couple had an unexpected delay to their honeymoon in Thailand. After a beautiful ceremony in New Zealand, the loved-up pair were waiting at the airport boarding gate, ready to depart. Suddenly, the bride suffered a severe allergic reaction and was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.
  • Daylight robbery: Whilst visiting his mother overseas to show off the beautiful engagement ring for his fiancé-to-be, a traveller decided to take a quick detour to a local shopping centre, having placed the ring in his backpack. Later in the day, he realised that an opportunistic thief had slashed open his backpack and the ring was gone…it never ended up on the finger of his bride-to-be.
