A new walking tour is delving into Sydney’s dark convict past and taking tourists back to a time when rum ran the Rocks.
The historical tour, by Sydney Urban Adventures spans two centuries of history, four bars and a wealth of stories about the convicts forced to settle in the Rocks, looking at their incredible tales of survival and entrepreneurship.

Intrepid’s Ryan Mossny said the tour focussed on the powerful black market rum trade between settlers, convicts, publicans and sailors, and how it led up to Australia’s first, and only, military coup – The Rum Rebellion.

“Our walk around the back alleys and steps of the Rocks will give you a new appreciation and understanding of the tumultuous history of this part of Sydney,” Ryan said. “We’ll drop into some of the Rocks’ favourite pubs and bars, visit some of the once-seedy back alleys where the Rum Rebellion began and top it all off with an Aussie barbeque. This is a tour designed to immerse you in the history and culture of the Rocks, while giving you a sample of delicious Australian wines, beers and of course, barbeque food.”

The tour includes:

  • Guided historical walking tour of the Rocks from a local guide;
  • Fascinating tales about convicts, settlers, publicans, bars and a military coup
  • Wine Tasting and wine appreciation lesson
  • Aussie BBQ including your choice of `self-cook’ (steak, chicken, lamb, kebabs, fish) or prepared meal (roast beef, roast pork or vegetarian pie)… PLUS – an all you can eat salad bar with roasted potatoes, gravy, salads, bread & sweets
  • Choice of drinks at each stop including beer, wine and at our last stop a cocktail

The tour runs every day except Mondays and takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Cost is $145 per person.

Meeting point: the Booking Centre, Wharf 6, Circular Quay.

End Point: Harrington St, The Rocks.
