When the plane’s escape chute inflates inside the aircraft

July 2, 2014 Aviation, Headline News 2 Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Passengers aboard a United Airlines domestic US flight have described their numbed shock when the plane’s emergency chute suddenly inflated inside the aircraft while it was cruising at 38,000 feet.

The pilot diverted the flight immediately to Kansas as cabin crew ran to contain the emergency chute, or slide, at the rear of the B737-700.

There “was a hiss and they [cabin crew] just had a panicked look,” passenger Diane Modini told local TV channel KWCH-TV.

“They quickly took the carts and ran to the back of the plane. The whole back cabin where they sat was full of the chute.”

Modini said that it passed through her mind that if the chute opened and “popped out the door” the plane might lose pressure immediately.

Flight 1463 left Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday evening and was headed for John Wayne Airport in California, to arrive a few hours later.

Passengers said they feared the worst when they heard the noise. The chute, designed to inflate outside the plane in an emergency, filled the galley. Despite the disturbance, all was safe and the flight – carrying 101 people, including five crew – landed without incident.

Several passengers snapped photos of the chute filling the cabin and posted them to Twitter. Passenger Taylor Martinez tweeted that it was the “scariest flight of all time.”

US aviation inspectors are investigating.
