Windscreen cracks force two emergency landings

egtmedia59Cockpit windscreen cracks forced two separate Bali-bound flights carrying a total of 555 people to make emergency landings last week. One of flights was out of Sydney.

Thai International flight TG467 from Sydney to Bangkok made an emergency landing in Bali after a crack was discovered in its cockpit window, officials said last Wednesday.

Two days later, on Friday, a cracked windscreen forced a Bali-bound Hong Kong Airlines plane carrying 261 people to return to Hong Kong.

The THAI flight, a B747, was carrying 273 passengers and 21 crew. Six hours into the flight, the captain discovered the defect and decided to land in Bali, the airline said in a statement. The passengers stayed in a Bali hotel overnight and flew to Bangkok later Wednesday on another plane.

THAI said it was sending investigators Bali to look into the incident and supervise the changing of the damaged window.

The Hong Kong Airlines incident involved an A330 operating flight HX707 from Hong Kong to Bali. The plane, with 249 passengers and 12 crew aboard, had entered Manila airspace when its pilot decided to turn back to Chek Lap Kok airport, Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department reported.

“The pilot discovered a crack in the cockpit’s windshield about one and a half hours after take-off,” the airline said. “For safety reasons, the pilot decided to fly back to Hong Kong airport.”

The carrier did not reveal the size of the crack.

“We are still investigating the cause of the incident,” it told the South China Morning Post.

Ten fire engines and an ambulance were placed on standby at the airport’s fire station.  Passengers flew out on another plane about 90 minutes later, Hong Kong Airlines said.
