Chocolate

There’s a long held notion that chocolate and wine should not be consumed together, but we think it would be a crime to separate two of life’s greatest pleasures. Red explains that the trick to pairing wine with chocolate is to make sure that your wine is sweeter than your chocolate – or whatever sweet treat you’ve been hiding from the kids to consume in secret. Dessert wines that have a fruity flavour such as merlots and the lesser-known zinfandel are always a great option. But if you’re not a red wine drinker there’s no need to worry, as there’s a variety of white wines that are the perfect accompaniment for your chocolate cravings. A gorgeous off-dry reisling or a chenin blanc has enough sweetness to compliment your chocolate of choice, or opt for a classic moscato. A good rule to remember that the darker the chocolate the darker the wine, so save white wines for your favourite milk or white chocolate.

Champagne

Nothing says ‘let’s celebrate’ more than the pop of a champagne bottle, so it’s no wonder that bubbly tends to be the most popular go-to drink for any celebratory occasion, from spring racing events to afternoon high teas!

Even though champagne is the perfect wine for getting you in the mood to celebrate, it is also (surprisingly) one of the most food friendly wines. The acidity found in a sparkling wine is the perfect palette cleanser after a mouthful of creamy, rich or fatty food. Plus the bubbles add a layer of texture to a meal, making it the perfect match for crispy, fried and crunchy foods. Do you know what this means? Next time you’re sharing fried chicken with the kids, pop a bottle and make your own dinner just a little bit fancy.
