Ancient Wassailing Event – 18 January 2018, 7pm.

Sheppys Cider Farm, Three Bridges, Bradford-on-Tone, Taunton, TA4 1ER.

An ancient Somerset tradition linked to the county’s cider making heritage. This is a unique event set on Sheppys Cider Farm where visitors can get involved in the historic activities associated with Wassailing such as warding away evil spirits from the orchards by shooting the trees, and ‘blessing’ the trees. There will also be a Wassailing Queen who will be raised up to place cider soaked bread in the apple tree branches. There will also be live folk music, the Taunton Deane Morris Men and food and drink available on the night and of course plenty of cider!

Garden Opening and RHS Lectures – 19 February – 17 June 2018.

Caerhays Estate, Gorran, St Austell, Cornwall, PL26 6LY

Cornwall’s most spectacular spring garden* is set to re-open to the public in 2018 between the dates of 19 February and 17 June. With an abundance of beautiful magnolia, it is a beautiful garden that is a must for anyone with green fingers! As well as the garden re-opening Charles Williams of Caerhays Estate will be giving a series of RHS lectures on the following topics; Caerhays national collection of Magnolias (16 March 2018), Enkianthus and the estates preparation for the 2018 Chelsea flower show (27 April 2018) and Styrax (14 June 2018).

New Isla Rose Plantation – 17 March 2018

Caerhays Castle is planting a new Isla Rose plantation this year in the castle grounds. After a hurricane in 1990 that destroyed the site, the gardens have been under restoration for over 100 years. 2018 is the year that the site is finally ready to be planted on and developed to display a brand new Isla Rose Plantation that will be officially opened by Roy Lancaster on the 17 March.

Land Rover Defender Day – 8 April 2018.

Pentillie Castle, Paynters Cross, St Mellion, Saltash, Cornwall, PL12 6QD.

A fantastic event for any motoring enthusiasts and all the family! Head to Pentillie Castle and celebrate the Land Rover Defender from the early Series 1 to the latest defender and all the models in between. As well as an impressive display of vehicles there will also be a 4×4 off-road course through the woods of Pentillie estate, a sleeper challenge that is new for 2018, local trade stands, children’s entertainment including Segway’s and plenty to eat and drink with some of Cornwall’s finest food and drink offerings available on the day.

Pirate Weekend – 12 & 13 May 2018.

The Barbican, Quay Square & Sutton Harbour, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 2LR

This year thousands are expected to don pirate fancy dress and enjoy a boat load of free events, including great music, the chance to meet the scurvy crew of a Pirate Ship and live cannon and musket firing. Businesses all across the Plymouth Waterfront get involved and this year the NMA will be sponsoring the beautiful Tall Ship the Johanna Lucretia, which will be docked in Sutton Harbour on Quay Square and is free for all to go aboard.

Somerset Day – 11 May 2018

Somerset Day will take place on 11 May, in honour of King Alfred the Great. The date was decided back in 2015 by public vote and has grown from strength to strength every year. There’s plenty of things to do throughout the day and rest of the week, from local produce markets, musical entertainment, heritage cider tasting and art exhibitions to name a few, sure to keep people of all ages busy. Save the date, a truly great celebration of all things Somerset.

Flavour Fest – 1 – 3 June 2018.

Armada Way, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 2AA.

The largest food and drink festival in the South West is set to return to Plymouth in 2018 and will exhibit a whole host of local producers! Plymouth Piazza will be full of stalls selling local delicacies, live music and a marquee bar. There will be cookery demonstrations taking place across the weekend from celebrity and talented local chefs entertaining the crowds that can reach numbers of more than 100,000.

PenGrillie – 15 July 2018.

Pentillie Castle, Paynters Cross, St Mellion, Saltash, Cornwall, PL12 6QD.

A day that celebrates the Great British barbeque this is a family-friendly day full of great food, live music and outside entertainment. The event will host a variety of local trade stalls and local food outlets as well as it’s very own BBQ competition which sees amateurs and professionals battle out to gain the PenGrillie Pitmaster title for 2018. There will also be live music and outdoor activities such as archery and rifle shooting.

Fireworks Championships – 8 – 9 August 2018.

The Hoe, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 2NZ.

The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront, 8 – 9 August 2018. The Plymouth Hoe will provide a natural amphitheatre where large-scale pyrotechnics can be used safely and watched from a variety of points with Smeaton’s tower as it’s backdrop, this spectacular evening is sure to amaze all who attend. In addition to a fun fair and thrill rides, Heart FM will be providing live music on a stage with a variety food stalls to feed the avid firework watchers. Each year six professional display companies are selected by draw to take part attracting tens of thousands to the City every August.

Royal William Yards Illuminate – wc 19 November 2018 (dates to be confirmed).

Royal William Yard, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 3RP.

Illuminate, an event marking the anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower will return in 2018 as part of the run-up to the Mayflower 2020 celebrations. Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard will host the event and the former victualling yard will be lit up with light installations, immersive visual art and light projections, being linked to the Barbican through the travelling of light. There will also be xyloband performances and workshops for visitors to participate in.
