egtmedia59As the trial of Francesco Schettino, the former captain of ill fated cruise liner Costa Concordia continues, reports from Italy say that a witness has described to the court how the captain jumped aboard a lifeboat.

Confirming that Schettino was not the last person to leave the vessel, as the Captain is supposed to be, Stefano Iannelli, who was a crewman in training, testified on Monday that he saw Schettino jump from the Costa Concordia, shortly before he himself jumped onto the roof of a lifeboat.

While Iannelli also said he didn’t see any passengers still aboard, it is clear that there were many passengers still onboard as media coverage confirmed showing helicopters rescuing passengers from the stricken vessel a considerable time after Schettino had left the vessel.

Schettino is on trial for manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing the shipwreck off the island of Giglio in January 2012, when thirty-two people died.
