WOM guide, Hong Kong’s leading online and printed guide to the city’s dining scene, celebrates its 10th anniversary with the inaugural     WOM guide “Top 10” Awards.

WOM, short for “Word of Mouth”, the technique adopted widely when it comes to restaurant recommendations, represents the people’s voice of dining in the city. By the people for the people, WOM guide and WOMguide.com is a comprehensive and unique online food magazine and restaurant guide.

To be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on 2 September, the WOM guide Top 10 Restaurant Awards celebrates the best eats in the city.  Selecting the Top 10 restaurants in 28 distinct dining categories*the awards will recognize 270 Hong Kong restaurants for their outstanding contribution to the Hong Kong dining scene. Additionally, awards for Green Monday, most outstanding vegetarian and environmentally conscious options, and Restaurateur of the Year will be announced.

The awards event will be hosted prior to the release of the 10th edition of the annual WOM guide, the almanac of the Hong Kong food culture, which will be available for sale in all major bookstores from 11 October 2014 at HKD168.

Front and center of the Hong Kong dining scene, the “always in the know” Fergus Fung and Samanta Pong, the gourmets behind the WOM guide brand, have witnessed and recorded the changing face of restaurants in Hong Kong over the last 10 years.  Samanta says, “The face of the Hong Kong dining scene has changed drastically. We now see an influx of celebrity chefs expanding to our busy city, from Jamie Oliver to Gordon Ramsay, whereas ten years ago they were few and far between. We’ve also seen a growing sophistication in the palates of Hong Kong diners who look for authenticity in their restaurants of choice.” Fergus comments, “The availability of ingredients has changed as well, we now have access to produce that we never had before, leading to more interesting restaurant choices. The “foodie” destinations have also changed with more off-Central dining areas becoming popular from Tai Hang to Wong Chuk Hang, I find this to be a very interesting development.”

With a strong passion for food and a desire to “eat for work”, Samanta and Fergus saw a gap in the market for an online and printed food guide, both leaving their successful investment banking careers to do so in 2004.  The guide has gone from strength to strength and became the number 1 selling book in Hong Kong in 2008. Since its inception, WOM guide has evolved into a foodie community, celebrating the best restaurants chosen by the people and becoming the definitive almanac of food culture in Hong Kong.
