catsMadame Tussauds Hong Kong today announced the grand arrival of British pop sensation One Direction. The Music Icons zone will display the wax figures of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and former member Zayn Malik as part of a touring attraction from 26 October 2015 until28 January 2016.

One Direction were formed in 2010 during the British televised singing competition The X Factor and quickly rose to international fame after finishing in third place. In only five years, the boy band has already accomplished the impressive feat of selling more than 50 million albums and garnered numerous awards worldwide. One Direction was named the second-highest earning celebrities under 30 by Forbes in 2014.

Their five wax counterparts will be shown seated casually on bleachers, where fans are invited to sit alongside their idols and pose for photos. Zayn remains a firm part of the five-piece. The figures portray the band at the height of their success and capture a defining moment in pop history of which Zayn was a huge part. All five of the boys were closely involved in their creation, giving sittings and input on styling.

The boys were honoured to be waxed by Madame Tussauds and were astounded at the sight of their own life-like wax figures. Liam Payne commented: “We actually first heard when we were over at Madame Tussauds looking at the figures so we were even more like, ‘wow, we’re going to get one of these made’. And they are so amazing as well. The quality of the work that goes on over there is mad.”

The boy band’s five singers sit side-by-side and pose playfully with their wax counterparts.

Ms Kelly Mak, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, said: “The wax figures of One Direction were previously exhibited at Madame Tussauds attractions in London, New York, Sydney and Singapore, and have drawn overwhelming attention from fans around the world. We are most delighted to bring in these popular figures to Madame Tussauds Hong Kong during the peak season of Christmas and New Year. Visitors are welcomed to sit side-by-side with the talented singers’ wax figures, take photos and interact with them.”

Created by Madame Tussauds London, the five touring figures cost £750,000 (approximately HKD 8.8 million) and a team of 40 artists four months to create. During the group’s two three-hour sittings, the sculpting team took hundreds of measurements and photos to ensure the wax likenesses would be made to perfection. The figures will travel to Bangkok after their three-month stay in Hong Kong.
