Seoul recently had the opportunity to show its capabilities beyond Incheon International Airport to attendees of last month’s Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific/World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition, held from May 26-28.

Taking place at Coex and Lotte World, 965 professionals representing 150 airports in 69 countries attended the event, discussing the latest issues faced by the aviation industry and showcasing the recent winners of the 2013 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards.

Conference sessions took place at Coex, with the ACI World General Assembly held on the 28th. Seoul’s largest convention and exhibition center was Seoul-ACI-Conference-2014-2also the venue for the event’s welcome reception on the 26th, which was accompanied by a traditional Korean percussion performance arranged by the Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Meanwhile the 2013 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards ceremony, honoring the star performers of the world’s major airports, was held on May 27th at Lotte World Ice Rink and featured a gala dinner. Musical entertainment for the evening included a fusion drum performance, traditional dance presentation, and a special contemporary song and dance routine featuring a miniature version of Korean pop star PSY.

Incheon International Airport has consistently won in multiple categories at the ACI ASQ Awards for the past 9 years. From 2005-2011, it maintained its position as ACI’s “Best Airport Worldwide”, and since 2012 has repeatedly won the “Best Airport By Region (Asia-Pacific)” and “Best Airport By Size (25-40 Million Passengers)” categories.

“This was our best attended WAGA ever outside of North America, which speaks volumes about the vitality of aviation in Asia and the importance of events like this,” said Angela Gittens, Director General of ACI World. “Of course, none of this would have been possible without the patronage of our gracious host Incheon Airport. From the feedback we’ve received we know that attendees were very impressed with Incheon’s organization and enjoyed the opportunity to experience Korean culture in beautiful Seoul. The city proved to be the perfect venue for a conference of this caliber.”

Event organizer Airports Council International works with airports and governments around the world to develop standards, policies and recommended practices across the airport industry. ACI also works with related aviation organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Authority, who last month held the 1st Meeting of Aeronautical Communication Services Implementation Coordination Group (ACSICG1), also in Seoul.  For more information on ACI, please visit www.aci.aero.
