Berry Bros. & Rudd, the original British wine and spirit merchant, are launching an extremely rare and limited edition sherry – Barbadillo Vesos 1891 in Hong Kong. With only 100 bottles in existence and a price tag of GB£8,000 (approximately HK$89,450), the luxury Amontillado sherry from the leading Spanish winemaker Barbadillo dates back to the 19th century and is offered directly from a barrel in the Barbadillo family’s personal collection.
The sherry is from one of five casks referred to as ‘Los Niños’ (the children’s casks), a christening gift given to former Barbadillo director, poet and sherry expert, Manuel Barbadillo when he was born in 1891.Generations of the Barbadillo family then tended to the centuries-old American-oak cask, in its cellar in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Southern Spain.
Deep mahogany in colour, the exclusive sherry fills the palate with intense nutty, woody and rich dried-fruit flavours, indicating its age.
A true masterpiece and collector’s item – the sherry has been bottled in the finest crystal glass that has been individually carved and etched with gold, whilst the bottle neck and the cork is hand painted with platinum, all presented in a fine Spanish leather box.
Tim Holt, Regional Sales Director of Bodegas Barbadillo explains that “the concept of ‘luxury’ Sherry – ‘luxury in the sense of exquisite quality and also only obtainable to a few – is new” but puts forward the sherry to encourage the market to re-evaluate the way it has been perceived for many years.
Tim adds “We aim to share this slice of our history to put the spotlight on one of the great wine regions of the world and hopefully this is will be a wakeup call to that fact.”
