Young Grom Rides Wave Of Change

December 22, 2016 Sports No Comments Email Email

Last night a screening of the latest Hurley x Waves 4 Water project, a short film “Winter the Grommet” was previewed on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.  The film can be viewed athttps://www.youtube.com/watchv=pmc_y9cUFRM&feature=youtu.be

The film shares young grom Winter Vincent’s incredible story of bringing fresh drinking water to third world surfing destinations.

At just nine years old young Winter was inspired to take up the cause when he saw some of his favourite pro surfers take part in World Water Day with Waves 4 Water.

Winter became part of the Waves 4 Water movement, encouraging travellers – surfers in particular – who visit third world destinations that don’t have clean drinking water to pack a water filter (or make a donation) to help bring clean drinking water to these remote regions.

In 2014 Winter started a fundraising Surf to School ‘mufti’ day at his local Manly Village Public School – where pupils wore boardies and surf gear to school, making a gold coin donation that went to the Waves 4 Water cause.

Winter’s Surf to School idea took off and has since been adopted by 26 schools world-wide, raising more than $40,000,which has helped bring fresh drinking water to more than 20,000 people.

Winter has just recently visited the Mentawai’s in Indonesia, where a lot of the ‘Winter the Grommet’ film was shot, bringing with him water filters to help save the lives of local kids that may have otherwise died from water borne illness.

Globally, every 90 seconds a child dies from water related disease and more than 7 million Indonesians lack access to clean drinking water.

Now 11 years old Winter has been on three clean water missions to the Mentawai Islands so far, and he plans to return there on another Waves 4 Water mission in June 2017.

Winter, the grom with a huge heart, is one of Australia’s best young surfers.  He is the current Queenscliff Boardriders U14 Champion, Northern Beaches U12 Champion, NSW State Title U12 Champion and Australian Open of Surfing U14 Champion.

Winter has also been made Surfrider’s youngest ambassador and campaigns to help keep plastics out of the ocean, and is a “Kids Give” Ambassador where he has raised more than $60,000 for School Aid.
