‘You’ve all been poisoned!’ Passenger flips out on flight

June 19, 2013 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59An apparently crazed passenger claiming to be a CIA agent screamed “We’re all being poisoned! You’ve all been poisoned!” before going berserk aboard a flight from Hong Kong to the US. Seconds later, passengers leapt from their seats and wrestled the deranged passenger to the floor.

It’s not exactly the ideal recipe for a harmonious flight. Some passengers aboard the United Airlines flight to Newark, New Jersey, said the man at one point wanted the plane diverted to Canada. They helped flight attendants restrain and handcuff the man until police and FBI agents met the flight shortly after landing.250x250px

Television footage from news helicopters showed officials leaving the plane with a man who was hustled into the back of an ambulance on a stretcher.

The New York Post reported that the suspect identified himself to passengers as Daniel M. Perry, “who sources confirmed was a former [US] federal employee”.

About six hours before the plane landed, the man started ranting about national security and the CIA, a passenger told the paper. Passengers acted to immobilise him after he suddenly reached into his pockets.

A passenger told the paper the man claimed to have information relating to US National Security Administration leaker Edward Snowden, and insisted the information placed him in danger.

The man was taken to University Hospital in Newark for psychiatric evaluation.

A possible clue to the man’s behaviour was unearthed by a New York Post investigative reported who used public records to find that the man lived with his parents. The reporter then phoned the man’s mother, who reportedly responded: “Oh my God,” and “I have to call his doctor” before hanging up.
