The resort is operated by Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand’s largest operator of hotels.
The award was presented to Centara’s senior vice president for sales and marketing Chris Bailey during World Travel Mart in London in November.
“Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives was our very first property to open outside of Thailand,” said Mr Bailey. “The resort opened late in 2009, and has been immensely successful.
“Our portfolio now includes overseas properties in Vietnam, the Philippines, Mauritius and Bali.
“We are now looking forward to the opening next year of our second resort in the Maldives, Centara Giraavaru Resort & Spa. This will complement the Grand Island Resort, and place us in a very strong position in marketing terms for tourism in the Indian Ocean region.”
Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives is located in the South Ari Atoll and is designed in a colonial style with whitewashed timber buildings and meandering boardwalks that lead to the guest accommodation, restaurants and other facilities.
There is a choice of 112 suites and villas suitable for individual travellers, honeymoon couples and family groups, along with a “resort within a resort” accommodation experience, the Island Club.
The resort features a variety of dining options, pools, recreation activities, sports and fitness facilities, a bar and lounge with nightly entertainment, a SPA Cenvaree, and a Kids’ Club.
Centara Hotels & Resorts is Thailand’s largest operator of hotels, with 38 deluxe and first-class properties covering all the major tourist destinations in the Kingdom. A further 16 resorts in the Maldives, Philippines, Vietnam, Bali Indonesia, Srilanka and Mauritius Indian Ocean, brings the present total to 54 properties. Brands and properties within Centara ensure that specific categories such as couples, families, individuals, and meetings and incentives groups will all find a hotel or resort that is appropriate to their needs. Centara operates 25 branches of Spa Cenvaree, one of Thailand’s most luxurious and innovative spa brands, and the company’s Kids’ Club is available at all the family-friendly resorts to ensure that the youngsters and teens are taken care of. Centara Hotels & Resorts also operates two state-of-the-art convention centres in Bangkok, and one in Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand.
