Swissôtel Vertical Marathon Celebrates 25 Inspiring Years on 25 November 2012!
Asia’s most exhilarating vertical race – the Swissôtel Vertical Marathon turns a quarter of a century old on Sunday, 25 November 2012! In commemoration of this 25th anniversary milestone, participants will enjoy an enhanced vertical race experience, starting with a brand new official website, www.swissotelverticalmarathon.com that was launched on 25 August 2012. The website offers online registration as well as practical and insightful information to take you a step closer to another triumphant race.
Soaring to a height of 226 metres, Swissôtel The Stamford, one of Southeast Asia’s tallest hotel and Singapore’s iconic symbol of Swiss hospitality, has been the site for Asia’s most gruelling Vertical Marathon since its inception in 1987. From its humble beginnings over two decades ago with only 180 participants, the country’s premier vertical race garnered a record-breaking 2,053 stair runners in 2011.
In celebration of Swissôtel Vertical Marathon’s 25th anniversary, this year’s vertical challenge scales new heights, locally and internationally. Witness word-class competition at its peak as 2,100 participants conquer 1,336 steps over 73 stories in the shortest time possible. The Swissôtel Vertical Marathon is the 8th leg out of 9 vertical races in the Vertical World Circuit which units some of the world’s most iconic skyscraper races in nine capitals across four continents, mainly New York, London, Basel, Berlin, Taipei, Milan, Ho Chi Minh City and Brazil.
2012 Race Categories
This year, the race features Men’s and Women’s categories from under 20 to above 50 years of age; the new Buddies and Besties’ Challenge and the Corporate Challenge. At the top of the league, elite atheletes will pit their skills against the best in Men’s and Women’s Open categories with the individual winners flying to New York, USA, for the prestigious, by-invitation only Empire State Building Run Up 2013, while category winners will walk away with fantastic prizes including hotel stays amongst others. All
participants who successfully complete the race will receive a personalised e-certificate and a commemorative finisher medal.
Charity Initiative and Adopted Beneficiaries
In line with Swissôtel The Stamford’s mission of being a positive and integral member of the communities in which we operate, the 2012 Vertical Marathon targets to raise a total of S$50,000 to be donated equally in 2 cheques of S$25,000 each to the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore (SCAS) – a programme supported by Community Chest, and the MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) Fund. Established in 1957, SCAS receives support from Community Chest to provide special education, rehabilitation services, vocational training and gainful employment for children and adults with cerebral palsy in Singapore, while the MILK Fund, registered in 2004, reaches out to disadvantaged children and youths by supporting them in their education, care and guidance, vocational and livelihood development or other special needs. For this monumental year, funds will be raised through valued corporate sponsorships and public support from the purchase of a limited edition 25th anniversary Niu Niu plush toy, Swissôtel’s lovable Swiss cow mascot from the land of the alps.
