Zippy electric bicycles revolutionise active travel

Electric bicycle tours, already available in Sydney through cycle operator BlueBananas, are part of a trend that’s going gangbusters in Europe and is about to revolutionise the active travel industry there, according to one operator.

Australian company UTracks, the European active holiday specialist, says the European electric bike revolution is spreading fast. It takes the puff out of cycling and opens it up to a wider clientele.

UTracks general manager, Kate Baker said the trend has exploded in Europe in recent years, with e-bike sales on the continent more than doubling from 600,000 in 2010 to 1.35 million in 2016.

A 2016 report from Navigant Research, a leading technology market research company, has predicted that eventually e-bike sales will account for one in three bikes sold in Europe (a figure already achieved in The Netherlands, probably the prime cycling country in Europe).

The report forecasts that globally e-bike sales will increase by 54.7% over the next nine years. In Germany alone, more than 500,000 e-bikes were sold last year.

In response to this surge in popularity, Baker says UTracks will offer electric bikes on 80% of its 187 cycling itineraries across the European continent in 2018 – a huge jump from 2015, when the firm offered ebikes on just a handful of its active bike holidays.

The company has released a 30-second video that rings true, with a traveller saying how an electric bike opened up a whole new world of cycling holidays for her.

As part of its Early Bird Deals, UTracks is offering 10% off a range of its 2018 European cycling itineraries. The offer applies to itineraries priced under AUD 2000 per person for new bookings made between 25 September and 20 October 2017 (conditions apply).
