Zombie-knife cyclist tarnishes city tourism image

June 4, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

The viral dash-cam video begins pleasantly, showing a typical London street scene, complete with red double-decker bus and bicycle – until a raging cyclist brandishing a blood-curdling zombie knife sends a driver fleeing for his life and turns the clip into a nightmare.

The real-life video, shot in broad daylight in south London, seemingly from a dash-cam, shows a driver pulling out carelessly into the traffic, almost knocking a man off his bicycle.

A chilling piece of road-rage follows as the cyclist produces a fearsome “zombie knife” – a colossal serrated weapon resembling a cross between a Bowie knife and a machete – and attempts to smash his way into the car, forcing the terrified driver to leap from his vehicle and flee.

Although no one was hurt in the confrontation, the video highlights something that promoters of London’s many tourist attractions would rather didn’t exist – a wave of knife crime sweeping the British capital.

The knife violence – much of it gang-related and committed by young black men – is not generally a threat to tourists, although knife robberies and seemingly motiveless attacks have also happened. The outbreak clashes head-on with London’s traditional welcoming image, which is perhaps why the video showing the cyclist attempting to smash the car window has gone viral on various social media platforms.

The vid shows the cyclist kicking at a blue Volkswagen Polo and menacing its 19-year-old driver with a knife that makes Crocodile Dundee’s famed weapon look like a penknife.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said the incident happened in London Road, Croydon. A crowd of commuters watched in horror as the brazen attack unfolded.

“Officers attended and established that the driver of the car was approached by a male in possession of a knife who smashed his window. The victim, a 19-year-old man in an attempt to escape collided with another vehicle, exiting on foot. He was followed by the suspect. The victim later returned to his car after the suspect made-off. No reported injuries.”

The incident coincided with a manhunt after a pedestrian was stabbed to death in west London. He was reported to be the 43rd person knifed to death on London’s streets this year, exposing a city underbelly far removed from the delightful atmosphere of the recent Royal Wedding.

Figures released by Scotland Yard last month showed that in the year to March, gun crime increased by 23% and knife crime by 21%.

The shock figures have prompted YouTube to start deleting videos depicting “drill” music, a rap genre popular among black youth and defined by grim, violent, nihilistic lyrics and ominous beats that some believe is contributing to the current spate of knife and gun attacks in London.

“Zombie knives” – the horrendous street weapons inspired by the blades seen in “zombie apocalypse” horror films – now face a complete ban in the UK.
