Hainan Airlines has been connecting Berlin with Beijing for 10 years. On September 5 2008, the Chinese airline took off from Berlin Tegel directly to the capital of the People’s Republic for the first time. Currently, the connection is operated five times a week.

Zhiwei Shi, International Marketing Director, Hainan Airlines: “Since 2008 Hainan Airlines has operated the direct flight between Berlin and Beijing. During the past 10 years, we have transported approximately 700,000 passengers and roughly 50,000 tonnes of cargo, which made a great contribution to the cultural exchange and economic development between Germany and China. With the trust and support of our customers and the cooperation and assistance of our partners, we have been successfully operating for over 10 years now. On behalf of Hainan Airlines, I would like to thank all to your great support! With our ‘Oriental Hospitality’, Hainan Airlines emphasises customer orientation. We will continue to improve our service quality, enrich our existing product selection and provide customers with better Skytrax five-star airlines service experiences.”

Xu Yongquan, Ambassador-Counsellor for the People’s Republic of China in Germany: “During the past 10 years, we have made important progress in various areas of development and cooperation between Germany and China as well as between Europe and China. In these 10 years, Hainan Airlines has operated direct flights from Berlin to Beijing, which helps to improve and deepen the exchange between the Chinese and German people and strengthens the foundation of cooperation between the two countries. The direct flight has and will continue to make contributions to build a silk road above the air.”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We congratulate Hainan Airlines for ten successful years in Berlin and are looking forward to further good cooperation. The demand for direct connections from Berlin to China is large. Together with Hainan Airlines, we are committed to expanding the frequency of flights between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People’s Republic of China. Our common goal is a daily connection between the two capitals, and looking ahead to the opening of BER in October 2020, further long-haul routes to China”

Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin: “Hainan Airlines has been flying between Beijing and Berlin for ten years and has therefore written a lasting success story. The number of Chinese visitors to Berlin also shows just how worthwhile the commitment in Berlin is: since the introduction of the connection, the number has increased almost fivefold.”

The Berlin-Beijing connection is equally interesting for tourists and business people from both regions. To date, around 700,000 passengers have flown the Berlin-Beijing route. Passenger numbers have been rising steadily since the launch of the service; last year the figure of 100,000 passengers per year was surpassed for the first time. In addition, around 50,000 tonnes of cargo were transported. There were 3,700 aircraft movements.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary, the airport company and Hainan Airlines have agreed on several measures to optimize their services. These include improving information for Chinese passengers through additional signs at the terminal in the Chinese language as well as the development of further joint products with the aim of further improving the travel experience and simplifying the stay at Tegel Airport.
