15 youths between the ages of 16 and 26, from Armenia, China, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Spain as well as Germany arrived to the Zülowniederung region for the 14th International Work Camp (21.07-12.08). Over the next three weeks they will be getting involved with the nature and landscape in the Rangsdorf district of Groß Machnow under the guidance of the Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg e.V. They are kicking off with a group bike tour to get to know the environment and the hosts. On Monday 23rd July 2018, the mayor Klaus Rocher, alongside Sandra Jüngst from the tourism office, will greet the young people at Rangsdorf town hall and hand out maps, postcards and timetables.

The international work camp, with support from the Rangsdorf Municipality and Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, has, since 2005, set itself the task of inspiring young people from around the world about the care and development of nature and landscape. Participants can also expect a framework programme with various excursions to Berlin and Brandenburg, as well as guided tours to the Bundestag or the airport, amongst others.

Dr. Manfred Bobke-von Camen, Chief Human Resources Officer at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We support the camp, now in its 14th year. It’s great to see young people from around the world coming to this region. With the completion of Gutspark, an area in the Groß Machow municipality will be made even more usable and will thus upgrade the airport region”.

The transition between village and landscape will be the focus of the International Work Camp this year. Around the monumental sites of Gutspark, Herrenhaus (now a library) and Bauerngehöft (now a primary school) there are a number of different tasks in the midst of Groß Machnow: in Gutspark there are another 200m of park paths to be preserved, along the Gutsgraben there are patches of invasive Himalayan balsam to be pushed back, old fruit trees are to be made accessible and utilisable while the area is going to be equipped with various shelters for microorganisms and plant pots, ready for lessons with the primary school.

The International Work Camp was first organised in 2005. The organisers are the Landschaftspflegeverein Mittelbrandenburg e.V. and the Verein Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste (ijgd). Since then, there have been 229 young people from 37 countries who have contributed a great service to the nature and landscape of Rangsdorf.

Over the course of the construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the airport company is implementing a large number of compensation and replacement measures over the long term, with the aim of preserving and improving the natural balance in the living environment around BER. The most extensive of these projects is the upgrade of the Zülowniederung area, an agricultural and cultural landscape between Mittenwalde, Dabendorf and Rangsdorf with a size of around 2,600 hectares. Thanks to its good connection by road and rail, Rangsdorf is the gateway to Zülowniederung and is an ideal starting point for excursions into nature. In addition to the village church and storch nests, Gutspark and the historical collection of buildings make up an attractive site only 3.5km from Rangsdorf Station and 5km from the lido on Rangsdorf Lake.
