Road trips are on the rise with a reported 53 million Americans alone set to embark on an open road adventure this year.

Moneybarn have ranked the most famous road trips in the world and ordered them on which ones you need to do first, based on data.

Moneybarn standardised the latest available data for the price of petrol, campervan hire and food to give an affordability score. Then they analysed road safety and tourism safety, as well as looking at the quality of national parks and points of interest per mile on route.

Scores were averaged across affordability, safety and tourism to give an overall list of the best road trips.

The data shows two Australian and four US road trips within the top ten.

# Road Trip Country
1 Cairns to Cape Tribulation Australia
2 The Atlantic Highway England
3 Canada’s Icefields Parkway Canada
4 Nordic Coastline Sweden
5 Through Napa Valley USA
6 The Great Ocean Road Australia
7 Basque Circuit Spain/France
8 The Trail of The Lonesome Pine USA
9 The Pacific Coast Highway USA
10 Southern Utah National Parks Circuit USA

Cairns to Cape Tribulation triumphed with its exceptional sights along the way, including The Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest and not to mention Cape Tribulation itself (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The sheer amount of points of interest on route per mile makes it the perfect road trip to experience for nonstop entertainment & beauty.

Of those studied, Panorama Route in South Africa came last. Not surprising given its high danger levels.

While Cairns to Cape Tribulation was superior overall, it fell to other road trips on both affordability and safety. Interestingly, despite the relatively expensive price of campervan hire in Sudan, The Road to Khartoum is the most affordable road trip due to its cheap petrol and food prices.

Finland’s Lapland Highway 4 is the safest road trip possible, as measured by tourism safety and road safety.

Simon Bayley, Director of Sales and Marketing at Moneybarn commented:-

“It came as no surprise to see an Australian route number one as it’s a very popular road trip destination, however, it was surprising to see the Cairns to Cape Tribulation route beat the infamous Great Ocean Road. This proves there are so many more routes out there to explore.”
