Not being happy with your career choices is not an uncommon thing. After all, most of us had to make the decision about our future before we even turned eighteen. Having preconceived notions about a certain profession, going to university in order to reach your dreams in this field and realizing that it is actually not all you hoped it would be, can be devastating.

However, it is good to know that this does not have to mean the end of the world. Regardless of whether you are disappointed with your career choice, you’re looking for ways to have more free time or your goals and interests have changed, it’s never too late to choose a new career path for yourself. If you need help with this, read on.

Assess your current situation

Are you satisfied with your current job? Which aspects do you enjoy, if any? What is it that bothers you? Is it the co-workers, the company culture or the type of work? Keeping a journal where you can write down all your reactions can help you realize how you actually feel and you can use it to prepare a pros and cons list to decide whether you should actually quit or start planning towards change.

Evaluate your skills and interests

Once you’ve decided that this is the right step, you need to assess your skills. Being aware of your capabilities will be of great help when looking for your new life path. The previously mentioned journal can also help you understand your likes and dislikes, some of which might not even be obvious to you. If you were not satisfied with your previous job, it might be because you did not find it challenging or interesting enough, so carefully consider what motivates you. Furthermore, make sure you define your core values as that can play a huge role in your search for a suitable employer or field of work.

Think of alternatives

Now that you have some concrete ideas of what appeals to you and what you are possibly interested in doing, you should think of some specific alternatives. Talk to your family and friends to see whether they have some useful input. You can even consult a career counselor to see what your possibilities are. Moreover, look online to see which jobs are popular, profitable, offer a flexible schedule or meet your requirements, whatever they may be.

Look at the available options

Before you actually quit your current job, you should probably see what other options you have. Do some research to see the job opportunities in your area. You can go online or visit an employment agency. Furthermore, decide whether you are willing to move to a different country seeing as how you might find the job of your dreams there.

Work on your skills and education

It might happen that you stumble upon a job that you really like but are simply not qualified for. Worry not, as you can always work on yourself and improve your skills. Visit a local college and see whether there are some classes you can attend. Moreover, there are various online courses nowadays as well. These options are amazing if you want to completely turn your life around. In case you were working in the cruel corporate world, you might be looking for a more altruistic career path. Well, you’ll be glad to know that there are many courses that can help you do some good in the world. For instance, obtaining a certificate in aged care or youth work will not only make you feel better about yourself but you will also be assisting people in need.

Seek out volunteering opportunities

Even if you do find a job that you really like, chances are that it might require some work experience in the field. In case you’ve decided to completely change your career, this might be an obstacle. However, you can look for volunteering opportunities which will allow you to get some practice and experience. Volunteering looks great on a résumé and it will show your potential employers that you are familiar with the work you will be doing.

Try job shadowing

You can also try your hand at job shadowing to see if a certain job is right for you or not. Contact some professionals in the field you are considering to see whether they are willing to let you observe what they do. This can last from a few hours to a few days and it can help you decide whether you like that type of work.

Before you hand in your notice, go through these steps and see whether any other job piques your interest. Once you’ve found something you see yourself doing, you can take that big step and change your life.
