This year, to commemorate Singapore’s bicentennial, The National Heritage Board has gazetted three river bridges – Cavenagh, Anderson and Elgin as National Monuments. The three bridges along the iconic Singapore River were pivotal to Singapore’s early years and played a significant role in creating the modern Singapore of today. The Board also gazetted the Padang as an additional National Monument.

Three of Singapore’s best-loved bridges, Cavenagh Bridge, Anderson Bridge and Elgin Bridge, as well as the green open space of the Padang, home to the Singapore Cricket Club and the host venue of the National Day Parade, all are located a short walk from The Fullerton Heritage precinct.
The pedestrianised Cavenagh Bridge, which dates back to 1869, is the city’s oldest surviving bridge linking the commercial and civic districts, and still retains numerous historic features. The Padang staged milestone events throughout the course of Singapore’s history, witnessing the surrender of the Japanese at City Hall, and the swearing-in of first president Yusof Ishak as head-of-state in December 1959, as well as the first National Day Parade in August 1966.

Clifford Pier

The Fullerton Waterboat House
Built in 1941, The Fullerton Waterboat House is an Art Deco building and the recipient of an Architectural Heritage Award for its painstaking restoration works. It is also home to dining venues with breathtaking venues of the Esplanade Bridge and the glittering skyscrapers of the Marina Bay foreshore.
Customs House
Located on the site where Singapore’s Customs Police once kept a lookout for pirate ships and smugglers from its 23-metre control tower back in the 1960s, Customs House still showcases its original butterfly fascia boards, beams and watchtower window panels. Today it is home to five signature restaurants with exceptional views from its location on the water’s edge.
