Explore Singapore’s colourful heritage, colonial and maritime history, and newly gazetted National Monuments from The Fullerton Hotels Singapore.

This year, to commemorate Singapore’s bicentennial, The National Heritage Board has gazetted three river bridges – Cavenagh, Anderson and Elgin as National Monuments. The three bridges along the iconic Singapore River were pivotal to Singapore’s early years and played a significant role in creating the modern Singapore of today. The Board also gazetted the Padang as an additional National Monument.

Situated at the heart of The Fullerton Heritage precinct – a vibrant dining, entertainment and heritage hub – both The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore are a stone’s throw from the country’s historic civic district, and many of its landmarks and monuments.

Three of Singapore’s best-loved bridges, Cavenagh Bridge, Anderson Bridge and Elgin Bridge, as well as the green open space of the Padang, home to the Singapore Cricket Club and the host venue of the National Day Parade, all are located a short walk from The Fullerton Heritage precinct.

The pedestrianised Cavenagh Bridge, which dates back to 1869, is the city’s oldest surviving bridge linking the commercial and civic districts, and still retains numerous historic features. The Padang staged milestone events throughout the course of Singapore’s history, witnessing the surrender of the Japanese at City Hall, and the swearing-in of first president Yusof Ishak as head-of-state in December 1959, as well as the first National Day Parade in August 1966.

General Manager of The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts, Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale says: “We are fortunate to be located right in the heart of the Lion City, where we are surrounded by iconic landmarks including the Padang, Cavenagh Bridge, Anderson Bridge and Elgin Bridge. In short, we are where Singapore’s rich history comes alive.”

“The Fullerton Building, home to The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is Singapore’s 71st National Monument, and the Mile Zero of Singapore, the centre of the Lion City. With the buzz of activities and new National Monuments at our doorstep, we envision The Fullerton Hotel Singapore to be the base from which everyone can explore and experience the city’s rich and unfolding history,” he concludes.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore

Situated in the exact location where a beacon once guided mariners safely into the port of Singapore, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is one of the city’s most recognisable and remarkable buildings.  From its former life as a General Post Office, the Hotel now bestows all the modern amenities you would expect from a five-star property, yet it has maintained the original coffered ceilings, cornices and restored Italian marble floors from days gone by.

Built over water, The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore is a stunning, jewel-like addition to the sparkling Marina Bay waterfront, with breathtaking architecture and stunning interiors that combine modernity and heritage. The Hotel offers classic luxurious hospitality and exquisite service, setting the tone for chic sophistication, and an indulgent lifestyle experience.

Guests on the tour will be captivated by stories of the city’s historic waterfront.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore also accommodates the Heritage Gallery, where guests can immerse themselves in a comprehensive museum experience, featuring rare postal archival materials dating back to the 1960s, and videos of pioneer personalities who have lived, worked and played in the historic precinct.

Heritage Landmarks and Properties

Beyond both hotels, the broader Fullerton Heritage precinct is home to numerous heritage properties and landmarks including the National Gallery of Singapore and Old Parliament House.

A short walk from both hotels, Singapore’s National Gallery is housed in two buildings gazette as National Monuments – City Hall and the former Supreme Court. Both buildings have been beautifully restored and now house the world’s largest public collection of modern art from throughout Southeast Asia. Singapore’s oldest surviving government building, the city’s former Parliament House has been given a new lease of life as The Arts House, a multi-disciplinary arts venue where visitors can enjoy exhibitions, concerts and explore the building’s history.

Clifford Pier

Once at the heart of Singapore’s immigration and trade, Clifford Pier was adorned with hanging red lanterns to welcome ships carrying goods, immigrants and visitors into the pier. Today, Clifford Pier has been conserved as a nod to the city’s significant maritime history, and is home to the eponymous restaurant The Clifford Pier. In the exact spot where the city’s forefathers first stepped foot on Singaporean soil, today visitors can sample local cuisine in an elegant Art Deco setting at two of the city’s bucket list dining experiences – Clifford Pier’s weekend Heritage Dim Sum Brunch and Singapore Heritage Afternoon Tea.

The Fullerton Waterboat House

Built in 1941, The Fullerton Waterboat House is an Art Deco building and the recipient of an Architectural Heritage Award for its painstaking restoration works. It is also home to dining venues with breathtaking venues of the Esplanade Bridge and the glittering skyscrapers of the Marina Bay foreshore.

Customs House

Located on the site where Singapore’s Customs Police once kept a lookout for pirate ships and smugglers from its 23-metre control tower back in the 1960s, Customs House still showcases its original butterfly fascia boards, beams and watchtower window panels. Today it is home to five signature restaurants with exceptional views from its location on the water’s edge.
