A Multidisciplinary Artist Exchange Programme Between Europe And Turkey, Be Mobile – Create Together! Project Comes To An End

Supported by four established and active cultural institutions in Turkey – Institut français de Turquie, Embassy of the Netherlands in Turkey, Goethe-Institut and Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) with the aim of promoting artistic and cultural exchange between Europe and Turkey, the Be Mobile – Create Together! project came to an end.

With the collaboration of well-respected artist residencies across France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey, the project enabled emerging artists and authors to spend time in artist residencies across Europe and Turkey. Artists from Turkey were hosted in residencies across France, Germany and the Netherlands, and vice versa.

The mobility-based, co-creation-oriented and peer-learning-focused Be Mobile – Create Together! was realised within the framework of the EU-Turkey Intercultural Dialogue project, which is co-funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey. During the project, 30 artists had the opportunity to visit 16 different residencies in 13 cities across 4 countries.

What happened?

  • The open call for Be Mobile – Create Together! was directed to emerging artists from the fields of visual, digital and performing arts, and emerging authors from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey. The inauguration of the call was made at Salon İKSV in Istanbul on 20 March 2019.
  • Over 600 applications to the open call were received from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey.
  • The representatives from project partners Institut français de Turquie, Embassy of the Netherlands in Turkey, Goethe-Institut, and Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), along with the residency directors from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey got together for the evaluation process at a reception held on 25 June 2019 at İKSV Nejat Eczacıbaşı Building in Istanbul.
  • The selected 30 artists participated in a variety of residency programmes in Paris, Cassis and Issy-les-Moulineaux in France; Dresden, Berlin and Stuttgart in Germany; Amsterdam, Maastricht and The Hague in the Netherlands; and Istanbul, Ayvalık, Bursa and Şirince in Turkey, between September 2019 and June 2020.
  • The closing event of the project was held on 30 June 2020 on Zoom with the participation of representatives from project partners and artist residencies, artists and project crews.
  • On July 2020, a book documenting the project was published. Edited by Zeynep Berik with Sait Fehmi Ağduk as the managing editor, and designed by Nazlı Deniz Oğuz and Oğuz Karakütük of Ka Atölye, the book is available online at https://www.bemobilecreatetogether.eu/781-e-book/
  • 30 artists visited 16 different residencies across 4 countries

    A total of 30 artists15 from Turkey and 15 from France, Germany and the Netherlands– were selected to participate in the residencies for periods that vary from 1 to 6 months between September 2019 and June 2020. All costs related to travel, transportation, accommodation and artwork production were covered.

    In France, Camargo Foundation hosted Ekin Can Göksoy and Sibel Horada, Cité internationale des arts hosted İlayda Tunca and Lara Ögel, Camargo & Cité internationale des arts joint project hosted Alper Turan, and Le Cube hosted Didem Yalınay.

    In Germany, Künstlerhaus Bethanien hosted Gülşin Ketenci, Hellerau – European Centre for Arts hosted Gizem Aksu and Melih Kıraç, and Akademie Schloss-Solitude hosted Kuzey Topuz.

    In The Netherlands, Dansmakers hosted Canan Yücel Pekiçten, Jan van Eyck Academie hosted Burcu Yağcıoğlu, Theater Rast hosted Diren Demir, and Writers Unlimited hosted Barbaros Altuğ and Çağla Meknuze.

    In Turkey, İKSV Residency hosted Nina Kuttler, Kasia Fudakowski, Lina Gómez, Annemarie van Splunter, Helena Kauppila, Mirak Jamal, Marianne Villiére, Simon(e) van Saarloos, Mairi Pardalaki, Rebecca Topakian, Mirsini Artakianou, and Vivien Tauchmann; arthereistanbul hosted Abel Korinsky, Jehsong Baak and Léa Roch. Artists staying at the İKSV Residency also had a chance to visit Barbara Residency (Ayvalık), Göl Yazıevi (Bursa), Misi Art House (Bursa) and Nesin Art Village (Şirince) in Turkey for week-long research trips.

    Performances all over Istanbul 

    During their visits in Istanbul, artists residing at İKSV Residency and arthereistanbul had the chance to produce and exhibit works.

    Among the projects that were produced and exhibited in Istanbul are a sound and light installation exhibited at Haydarpaşa Ferry Dock by Abel Korinsky, an open rehearsal by Lina Gómez held at Hasköy Yarn Factory, a short film by Kasia Fudakowski, a research on coastal cleaning by Nina Kutler, a mask workshop and micro carnival by Marianne Villiere, an oil painting exhibition by Léa Roch, Iznik tiles of Helena Kauppila inspired by triangular shaped genetic codes, a series of performative training classes by Vivien Tauchmann, and a book launch by Simon(e) van Saarlos on the cult of monogamy.

    Works of artists from Turkey in Germany, the Netherlands, and France

    Between September 2019 and June 2020, the artists from Turkey from various disciplines participated in residency programmes in France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

    Among the projects produced and exhibited in Germany, the Netherlands and France are a book launch by İlayda Tunca, a dance performance by Canan Yücel Pekiçten exploring alternative ways of enjoying Ceylon tea, a presentation by Burcu Yağcıoğlu on the mutation of plants, an interactive art installation by Diren Demir focusing on confessions, a generative space about rethinking data by Didem Yalınay, an exhibition by Gülşin Ketenci about women athletes, a presentation-experiment about queer appropriation by Alper Turan, and a podcast by Gizem Aksu and Melih Kıraç exploring performing arts without stage.

     Be Mobile – Create Together! book

    On July 2020, a book documenting the project, which spanned 548 days, was published. Edited by Zeynep Berik with Sait Fehmi Ağduk as the managing editor, and designed by Nazlı Deniz Oğuz and Oğuz Karakütük of Ka Atölye, the book comprises conversations between participating artists on the impact of creating art in different geographies on their artistic practice, their experiences of the programme and new relationships they have made, and new works that have sprung from this experience along with stunning photographs.

    Be Mobile – Create Together! podcast series

    Be Mobile – Create Together! is also preparing a podcast series, which includes talks with the artists participated in the project. Through these conversations, the dialogues and interactions that were formed between artists throughout the programme will meet with the audience on a different platform.
