Afterpay has partnered with the Australian Red Cross to encourage its global customers and retail network to support bushfire-affected communities through the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund. The funds will enable Red Cross to give people the support they need in disasters: whether that’s help to prepare, a safe place to take shelter, psychological first aid, information or practical support through the months or even years it can take to recover.

Afterpay customers from around the globe are encouraged to make a donation by visiting www.redcross.org.au/afterpay and select the amount they would like to donate directly to the Australian Red Cross. All donations over A$2.00 are tax-deductible for Australian citizens.

Afterpay will also encourage our 40,000+ global merchant partners to promote the donations page to their customers around the world. Many merchants across Australia have already made pledges or will be joining efforts to raise funds.

US and UK customers and retailers have been asking us how they can contribute. We are pleased that international donations will be accepted through the donations page. Steve Madden and other US retailers have already indicated their support for the campaign.

In addition to customer donations, Afterpay will pledge A$1 for every purchase made this Thursday (9 January) to the Red Cross in support of the bushfire recovery. The Afterpay pledge will be a minimum of A$200,000.

Red Cross Acting CEO Noel Clement welcomed the partnership with Afterpay and said: “The fund helps Red Cross teams to support people affected by disasters, including in evacuation centres and recovery programs. It also covers emergency grants to people who have lost homes in the recent bushfires.”

In addition to the current campaign, we are working with the Red Cross to explore options to support making Afterpay available as a payment option on their site.

Afterpay CEO Anthony Eisen commented, “We know that when a disaster happens, especially on our doorstep, Australians have an incredible ability to band together to help one another.

“Our thoughts go out to all the families and individuals that have lost their homes or local businesses, as well as all the firefighters and volunteers working around the clock.

“Our retail partners in the US and UK are also keen to help, and we are excited that Steve Madden and others will be encouraging their customers to donate and that we can provide a global solution to our 6.6 million customer base to pledge.

“We also want to give directly, so we’re proud to be pledging A$1 for every purchase made through our international network this Thursday.”
