Air Chathams will commence direct Auckland to Norfolk Island weekly flights on Fridays commencing 6 September 2019.

The New Zealand carrier has been working with Norfolk Island Tourism and Norfolk Island Regional Council to lock in this highly anticipated new service for this popular short-haul holiday destination.

Promotion will begin in May targeting audiences likely to have an interest in travelling to Norfolk Island and those currently on connecting routes with Air Chathams.

Potential passengers are advised to look out for some special fares for the launch in September.

Air Chathams has been flying to Norfolk Island on a regular basis over the last two years with a range of charter tour groups.

The charters have been well patronised for a week’s duration allowing visitors to appreciate the full experience Norfolk Island has to offer.

The new route will be serviced by the comfortable and capable Convair 580 aircraft regularly used by Air Chathams for recent charter flights to Norfolk Island.

The Convair is configured for 50 passengers with an estimated flight time of just over two hours.

Air Chathams will fly to Norfolk Island each Friday departing Auckland at 9.00am and returning same day from the island.

Introductory fares are expected to start at NZD199 (exclusive of taxes) and will be available in limited amounts for scheduled flights.  Tickets will go on sale mid to late April 2019.

Norfolk Island Regional Council General Manager, Lotta Jackson said the announcement of this new service was “wonderful news to be able to provide this streamlined access to the island for our visitors from New Zealand”.

“The island has always been a popular holiday destination for New Zealanders with so many varied and memorable experiences for all to enjoy,” Ms Jackson said.

Norfolk Island offers beautifully-appointed hotels, cottages and self-catering villas for guests situated in stunning surrounds and presenting breathtaking island and ocean views.

The island’s eateries offer an abundance of locally sourced fresh, organic and wholesome produce. Think fresh fish, local beef, succulent pork and vegetables picked daily. Add to the mix boutique products including handmade chocolates, honey, artisan cheese and a local cellar door winery, and the island becomes an ideal short-haul getaway for gastronomes.

Stunning swimming beaches and majestic coastlines contrast lush rainforests and bushland set against the backdrop of dramatic history and unique culture.

Visitors may like to time their trip to coincide with any of the island’s annual festivals or events including history, music, food, theatre, dancing, art, and sports – and this year’s first staging of the Melbourne Comedy Festival in August. Visit the Events Calendar on the Norfolk Island Tourism website for event details.

One can enjoy golf at a seaside course, go bike riding and bushwalking, take a, glass bottom boat tour or head on an ocean trip to Phillip Island, enjoy snorkelling, swimming, surfing, deep sea fishing and art and craft markets, or pamper yourself with a spa treatment.

“We are really excited to re-establish that direct link to Auckland,” said Air Chathams General Manager, Duane Emeny.

“We are getting so many queries about when flights will commence so I feel very confident that this will be another successful route for our family airline,” Mr Emeny said.
