The latest update from the Air Wilpena pilots who fly the scenic routes over South Australia‘s magnificent Lake Eyre reveals the waters flowing south from outback Queensland have now more than half-filled the lake, creating an incredible visual spectacle for visitors to the region.

North of the lake birdlife is starting to thrive as the water flows the Diamantina and Georgina river systems. There are many smaller bodies of water forming in the Channel Country, indicating the possibility of the rivers breaking their banks and the land turning into a flood plain. Recent activity from Cyclone Trevor and Cyclone Veronica are expected to continue to push large quantities of water south.

Air Wilpena operates a swag of scenic flights to view the Lake Air spectacular from on high, with scenic flights from just four hours’ return duration, or combining with four-wheel-drive tours for a full day’s adventure. Options include:

  • Lake Eyre and Muloorina Station: Passengers enjoy views of outback South Australia with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge. The flight passes over Parachilna, the township of Marree and awe-inspiring Lake Eyre before landing at the remote 400,000-hectare Muloorina Station. Tour duration: four hours, rates from $1034 per passenger*.
  • Lake Eyre & William Creek: Excellent views of outback South Australia begin with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge, before passing over Parachilna, the Leigh Creek open-cut coal fields, the township of Marree, Muloorina Station and the awe-inspiring Lake Eyre. Land at the remote town of William Creek for lunch (population approx. 10) and return via the Painted Hills, Andamooka opal fields and Lake Torrens.   Tour duration: six hours, rates from $1155 per passenger, lunch included*.
  • Lake Eyre, William Creek & Warburton Grove: A scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and on to Lake Eyre, via William Creek, and over Maree, and Muloorina Station. When the rivers are flowing it is common to see an abundance of birdlife at the Warburton Groove. A highly recommended experience. Tour duration: five hours, fares from $1365 per passenger*.
