Amanyara, a pristine Caribbean oasis set between a marine national park and a nature reserve on the island of Providenciales, Turks & Caicos, is the ideal location for guests to gain an understanding of the destination’s eco-system and marine life. Since opening in 2006, conservation has been at the heart of Amanyara and preservation of the Providenciales’ natural beauty, protected parklands and West Indies wildlife remains a priority. Under the direction of Amanyara’s new resident Marine Biologist Clare Atkinson, who specializes in sea turtle conservation and has worked with a variety of non-governmental organizations in Greece, Costa Rica and the Seychelles, guests can now delve deeper into learning about the island’s unique ecosystem. Guided by Clare, who is also a certified open water diver, Amanyara now offers a range of new ecological experiences including a Junior Marine Biologist Programme, freediving courses and field studies for guests of all ages.

Junior Marine Biologist Programme February 16-22, 2020 The Junior Marine Biologist Programme is centered around three field studies which allow children to experience what it’s like to be a marine biologist. Each survey will begin with a topical and engaging presentation followed by data collection and analysis to showcase the importance of field research in conservation. The studies include: – Sea Turtle Nesting: An introduction to the stages and behaviors of sea turtle nesting on the beach. Children will build their own nest, mark it and record measurements from varying points in order to later find where the turtle eggs are buried, test the measurements and evaluate the data collected. – Fish Surveys: On a guided snorkel excursion, children will learn how to identify different species and record data using simple equipment and methods to determine types and variety of fish populations. – Coral Health: Children will examine the many species of coral life from the resort’s beach and learn how to accurately identify and record each species on dive slates.

Freediving February 16-22, 2020 To encourage the care and protection of the ocean, renowned free-diver and instructor Samantha Kildegaard will lead three freediving courses at Amanyara: Discover Freediving (available to all ages), PADI Basic Freediving, and PADI Freediving Certification (available to guests over the age of 12). In groups of two to four people Samantha will teach practical breathing techniques, relaxation and stretching exercises to prepare guests for a dive. These programmes are open to all ages and fitness levels, including children.

Discover Freediving During the half-day Discover Freediving Course, guests will gain an introduction to the essence of freediving, focusing on breathing, relaxation and stretching and the art of holding one’s breath in a comfortable environment.

PADI Basic Freediving Course The Basic Freediver Course takes place in an enclosed section of calm water and helps guests to develop the key skills required for freediving. The concept of this course is based on understanding the technique and safety elements of the diving equipment through independent study with the PADI Freediver Touch. The course teaches learning and breathing techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea.

PADI Freediver Certification Course The most advanced course offered at Amanyara, the PADI Freediver Certification takes place in the open water of the Caribbean Sea and expands and develops freediving skills. Students will learn equalization, diving, kicking techniques, body positioning, streamlining, safety drills, nutrition and hydration under Samantha’s guidance. Mermaid Encounters – Freediving for Children Year-Round The emphasis of this course is on children’s interaction with and confidence in the water. “Mermaiding” is the best way to introduce Amanyara’s youngest guests to freediving in an enjoyable and safe environment. They will learn the dolphin kick using a mini monofin and will enjoy supervised games in the resort’s infinity pool. “Mermaiding” is available to all ages in the swimming pool and children of 8 years and older in the ocean.
