Aquaman Fever Hits the Gold Coast

Pack your Speedos and head to the home of all things Aqua-esque this summer…

The Gold Coast has played host to a menagerie of half-humans ever since filming for the blockbuster movie got underway in May, 2017. And while the region has been overrun by aqua-people from The Seven Seas and star-spotting has been the norm, the stars of Aquaman have also been munching away at favourite local menus, slithering through iconic waterways and repurposing some of the best local landmarks into epic film sets.

To say Queensland has Aqua fever is an understatement – but there’s plenty Aqua-esque to go around on the Gold Coast; so why not join in and sample some of what the cast and crew could enjoy while filming one of the most anticipated films of the year.

First, start out with a pre-breakfast swim at the first filming location used for Aquaman, Currumbin Beach. The beach is an inlet that’s protected from the wind and from Aquaman’s deadliest villain, the Black Manta.

Channel your inner sea creature and fuel up at Cardamom Pod with a Mermaid Bowl made from a blend of mangoes, coconut milk and spirulina – a potent algae that gives the dish its ocean-green hue. Once your belly’s full, power up your fins, test your balance, and become a Stand-Up Paddle-boarding yoga God by taking a tour with Go Vertical SUP throughout the waterways from Budds Beach.

Even Aquaman displays his human weaknesses by splurging with fish and chips (as the character does in comic book issue seven, Volume One).  You can order fish and chips at the region’s long-time favourite seafood haunt, Fishermans Wharf Tavern (located near The Spit, another location used to film Aquaman).

To get a behind the scenes look of the feature film, make a visit to The Aquaman Exhibition at Warner Bros. Movie World.  It features set-pieces, props and costumes including those worn by actors Jason Momoa and Amber Heard.

Have a well-deserved siesta and be the heir to the throne by renting a holiday home on Hedges Avenue – known as Millionaires Row – in Mermaid Beach where Aquaman star Jason Momoa reportedly stayed during the movie’s seven month filming. Elite Holiday Homes have got the good to get you set up like a movie star.

Now it’s time to work out like the master of the sea himself.  Momoa was said to have joined forces with former WWE wrestler, Made Abelhamid, to train during the filming.  Rock climbing – said to be one of Momoa’s favourite activities – weight lifting, and sparring were all said to be part of the regime.  Get superhero fit at The Treetop Challenge in Currumbin which offers a high ropes adventure park. If your goal is to spot Aquaman star Momoa on the Gold Coast—or at least, to dine like him—Social Eating House is not only a favourite spot for Aquaman, it’s also a favourite for the likes of Hollywood stars Blake Lively and Chris Hemsworth when they filmed on the Gold Coast.

Villains might never rest, but superheroes do.  So book an appointment at Palazzo Versace for a 60-minute Purifying Algae Facial – how very Aquatic.  The detoxifying facial utilises the power of purifying Caviar Algae to hydrate and balance the skin. So even if you don’t look like a superhero, at least you’ll look like a Hollywood star.
