The 37th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2018 under the theme of “Sustainable Connectivity, Boundless Prosperity” in Chiang Mai from 22 to 26 January was underway with Laos to welcome some 450 participants (buyers, sellers, and media) for a delightful and exciting “Lao Night” on the evening of January 23 at the Empress Hotel & Convention Center.

The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of Lao PDR was not afraid to take any expenses to offer a sumptuous dinner reception including countless bottles of Lao Beer in order to entertain their guests for Lao Night. In the context of Visit Laos Year 2018, there was a cultural performance program with some of the 49 colorful ethnic minorities presenting an elegant fashion show as well as professional Lao singers and musicians.

First, Miss Lotchana Anoulak sang “The beauty of Luang Prabang” followed by the classical Nang Keo Dance, which has existed since the 14th century, when King Fa Ngum of Lan Xang married Nang Keo, the daughter of the king of Angkor in Cambodia. After that there followed a demonstration of the Lao Khaen musical bamboo instrument, which will be played during the Loi Ka Thong Festival. Another dance was performed by happy Hmong women and a chorus sung by Miss Lotchana Anoulak and Bounnoum Inthavong called “The evening in our homeland” followed by an acrobatic show. The dance of “Watching the rising sun” illustrated the solidarity among young women, whose strong aspiration is to live in peace and prosperity. Another chorus was sung by Khamphouvanh Phanthabuth and Bounnoum Inthavong, before a magic show was ending with a dance, showing the friendship relations among people in the 10 ASEAN countries.

Actually, Laos is the jewel of the Mekong River and to visit Laos is an experience of nature, culture and history. Valuable information of Laos was given at the end of the night including a booklet about “Nature-based Tourism” referring to the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Awards.
