Australia’s best fish and chips have been found

How many people know that Australia runs National Fish and Chips awards? They are administered by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the national winners have just been announced.

Senator Richard Colbeck presented awards to the winners at a ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra. (The event’s menu featured seafood, as seemed only appropriate.)

And the winner is… Western Australia’s ‘Hooked on Middleton’. It took the National Judged Award.

“Hooked on Middleton is a family business big on showcasing the area using local fish and other produce,” one of the judges said.

“All staff members are knowledgeable and keen to educate the public, I did not have to ask for information; they volunteered it.”

The state and territory winners of the Judged Awards are:

  • Beach Street Seafoods from New South Wales (includes the ACT)
  • Frying Nemo from the Northern Territory
  • Fish & Chips Co for Queensland
  • Stunned Mullet from South Australia
  • Tasmanian Gourmet Seafood from Tasmania
  • Blu by Australian Seafood from Victoria

Since voting opened in August, customers have also had a chance to vote for their favourite fish and chips in the People’s Choice Awards category. Over 19,000 votes were received. The state and territory winners in that category are:

  • Pelican Rocks Seafood Restaurant and Café from New South Wales
  • Frying Nemo from Northern Territory
  • Fresh Coral Seafoods from Queensland
  • Sotos Fish Shop from South Australia
  • Fraggles Fish and Chips from Tasmania
  • Seafood on Evans from Victoria
  • Ocean and Paddock from Western Australia

The judges noted that “many places scored very close” and it was hard to pick a winner.

“Some of the best shops had an emphasis on training staff and young people. The menu changed daily and each day it had new factsheets to complement it.”
