Domestic travellers can move swiftly and safely in and out of Avalon Airport with minimal contact with other passengers, thanks to new security upgrades and the installation of state-of-the-art touchless technology. The airport, just 50 minutes from Melbourne CBD, is one of the first in Australia to transition
its security systems to 100 per cent Computed Tomography technology, with the installation
of a new Rapiscan CT scanner, body scanner and checked baggage screening (CBS) machine
for greater efficiency within the airport’s domestic terminal.

In just moments, the new zero-contact millimeterwave security body scanners automatically
detect potentially dangerous items carried on the body or in clothing, while the CBS
machine and the CT scanner create three-dimensional images of a passenger’s baggage,
providing security personnel with a clearer view of the contents. For passengers the relief
will be in finally being able to leave their laptops in their bags.

“This means that going through security is a smoother exercise with less contact,” said Avalon Airport CEO, Justin Giddings. “The new technology saves travellers the need of having to remove their laptops from their bags as the CT scanner gives our security staff a very clear picture of what’s inside.”

Avalon Airport is also about to install six new check-in kiosks by Elenium Automation where
instead of touching screens or physical surfaces, passengers control and interact with the
check-in device from a safe distance using head movements.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve travel efficiency for passengers, while providing
them with a safer and more seamless way of moving quickly through the airport. Eventually
all airports Australia-wide will need to use this technology and we’re proud to be one of the
first in the country to implement it fully,” Mr Giddings said.

In addition to its security updates and touchless technology, Avalon Airport has renovated
areas of the domestic terminal including the café with further upgrades to be announced
later this year.

“The new updates and renovations to the airport have created job opportunities for many
Victorians. We have invested heavily on making improvements to Avalon Airport while air
travel has come to a standstill. We engaged several local contractors to help with the
refurbishments to support our region’s local businesses and to ensure our staff remained
employed during this tough time,” Mr Giddings said.
