A serene and incredibly scenic journey through ancient forests, secluded hot springs and tranquil mountain passes, this tour showcases some of Japan’s most sacred historic sites.

The 4-day, 3-night Best of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail brings travelers through incredibly beautiful landscapes, visiting Shinto shrines nestled in quiet glades and stopping for rejuvenative time in one of Japan’s oldest hot spring resorts. The journey also features a cruise down the Kumano-gawa River in a traditional Japanese boat, and a visit to Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine, from where travelers can view Nachi Falls, the tallest waterfall in Japan.

“There’s more to Japan than bullet trains, Mount Fuji and Tokyo,” says General Manager of Backyard Travel, Trystan Trestchenkoff. “This unique trip into the wilderness of the stunning Kii Peninsula showcases some of Japan’s most serene and sacred sites – it’s a great journey in its own right, and the perfect ending to an exciting stay in the bigger cities.”
