Boutique ski lodge at the lesser-known Japanese ski area Madarao

January 12, 2018 Ski No Comments Email Email

A trio of investors who appreciate Japanese powder snow will entice additional visitation to Madarao, a lesser-known ski area, due to the purchase of a ski in – ski out boutique ski lodge in the heart of the resort. They offer a ski-lodge-style holiday at Kuma Lodge that has nine well-equipped bedrooms spread over two floors. Guests have to walk less than 100metres to the closest ski lift.

Another key aspect of their acquisition is the concierge-style service they offer to lodge guests such as an on-site manager Taka-san (who has good English skills and helps plan each guests arrival plus he ensures they maximise their time in Madarao), arrange evening meals at hand-picked pensions within the resort, side trips such a visit to the world-famous Snow Monkeys, snow equipment hire, ski or board lessons with English-speaking instructors, suggestions where guests could ski or board at other resorts such as either Myoko /Nozawa and ensure guests upgrade to a Mountain Pass to explore Tangram Ski Circus.

The lodge is small enough to maintain a private home feel, it caters for a maximum 21 guests max per night so it takes on a family or holiday house feel with guests
interacting and making new friends. Often they start with a dinner reservation of between 4-6 people and end up with about 10-15 people, who enjoy an apres ski drink and an opportunity to share stories from their day on the mountain. This is why the operators bought the lodge, the interaction is priceless.

More and more western skiers and boarders are exploring the options outside of the well-known ski areas of Hakuba and Niseko. Madarao offers less crowded snow-covered terrain plus ample amounts of powder snow that is a key element of a skiing and boarding adventure in Japan. It is quite close to historic Nozawa Onsen and a holiday at Kuma Lodge is well within the budgets of most Western snow enthusiasts.

Madarao is a powder skiers haven, the undiscovered resort famous for it’s “Madapow” offers 60% ungroomed courses & phenomenal tree skiing. its convenience for international travellers is key with a 110 min new bullet train direct from Tokyo.
