June 16, 2020 Visit Queensland No Comments Email Email

Following a tough couple of months limited to the dreaming phase, we are back in business and our destination is bigger, bolder and more breathtaking than ever.

And for the next few weeks, Queenslanders – we have it all to ourselves!

Just over 600km north of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway, our wonderful slice of the Sunshine State comes alive in the winter months.

Expanding from the Central Highlands in the west to the Keppel Islands in the east, the Capricorn region within the Southern Great Barrier Reef destination combines exploration with seclusion.

Featuring stunning scenery ranging from forests and sandstone cliffs, to pristine white beaches and clear coral reef waters, now is the perfect time to start creating new memories and building moments that matter as you explore the endless possibilities right on our doorstep.

Social distancing is not a new thing in our patch with miles of endless space, rainforest to lose yourself, and natural wonders leaving you speechless. Perhaps the only major lifestyle risk to be aware of when visiting – you may never want to leave…

From remote island paradise holidays to family drive adventures, we are welcoming visitors back with open arms to play and stay, offering an overabundance of positive experiences within a safe and conscious environment.

You are only two clicks away from awesome holiday deals and diverse drive itineraries so move past dreaming and start booking.

No matter what your style of experience, the Capricorn region has it all. Here are a few of our favourites to whet your appetite…

Discover an island wonderland

The ultimate barefoot experience starts at Great Keppel and Pumpkin Islands, offering holidays to suit singles, couples, families and groups, all within the peacefulness of a remote, natural island setting. If current affairs and news has consumed you for months, there is no better time to enjoy a digital detox while you rest, swim, snorkel and discover the perfect weekend escape or holiday retreat.

Explore a beach-lovers paradise

The heart of the Capricorn region is the genuine country town of Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast. Here, your beer is served with a smile, your dinner is sourced locally, and the streetscape combines the historic charm of the past with a flourish of the future. The local community of beachfront restaurants, accommodation providers and attractions has whipped up some great packages that will tantalise your taste buds and make your holiday planning a breeze.

Uncover a slice of Mother Nature

Outstanding coastal scenery, massive sand dunes, rugged pinnacles and remote camping opportunities are highlights of a visit to Byfield National Park and Byfield Conservation Park. Hike through lush rainforests and enjoy flora and fauna like you’ve never seen before.

Or take a journey to Carnarvon Gorge and be inspired by towering sandstone cliffs, significant Aboriginal art sites and a biosphere home to ancient ferns and upwards of 340 species of wildlife. Soak up the magic of the Sandstone Wilderness – a place that has flourished for millennia.

Fossick for treasures

Unearth one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest gemstones at the Sapphire Gemfields in Central Highlands. A magnet for free spirits and adventure seekers who want to experience the real Australian outback and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. The Gemfields are for those who believe if they scratch the earth’s surface, a 25-carat sapphire could be lying there…waiting just for them.

Visit the Beef and Barra Capital

The Beef and Barra City of Rockhampton is booming; a modern throwback to the heydays of Queensland’s colonial past, offering all the cosmopolitan conveniences in a contemporary riverside setting. When the sunsets on the mighty Fitzroy River, premium dining can be found along the heritage-listed streets, with some of the best steak houses, restaurants, pubs, clubs and cocktail bars found anywhere in regional Queensland.

Take the wheel and steer

Start focusing on the front windscreen and not the rear-view mirror with on and off-road adventures to suit every traveller of every age. Our backyard offers the fun, flexibility and freedom you would come to expect on a driving holiday, with journeys within relatively short travel distances and accessible with a conventional vehicle or caravan in tow.

But don’t take our word for it… head to and find and plan your perfect getaway.
