International hotel executive Tom Calame is set to become general manager at Sheraton Waikiki, as announced by Area Vice President Harris Chan, Marriott International – Hawaii & French Polynesia. The appointment takes effect on August 6, when Calame assumes the general management responsibilities of the 1,636-room Sheraton Waikiki. The property, located on Waikiki’s best stretch of beach, is consistently among market leaders in all segments of travel.

Calame, a native of the Netherlands, has worked with Marriott International for nearly two decades, serving in a variety of executive capacities such as resident manager, hotel manager, and general manager. Most recently, he has served as complex general manager for the Aruba Marriott Complex since December of 2012, overseeing the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, Marriott Surf Club and Marriott Ocean Club – three beachfront resorts with more than 1,600 rooms. During his tenure, the Aruba Marriott Resort won a number of awards, including Hotel of the Year for Marriott’s Caribbean & Latin America region.

Over the years, he has earned numerous commendations from Marriott International for successfully driving revenue, while elevating associate and guest satisfaction levels at the same time. Most noteworthy are the recognitions as a two-time General Manager of the Year, winning once in 2010 while he was at the JW Marriott Hotel Lima in Peru, and again in 2011 while he was at the Renaissance in Amsterdam. He also has experience in Mexico, where he helped open the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa.

“We are proud to have someone of Tom’s caliber join us in Hawaii,” said Chan. “His appointment comes at an important time for the destination, especially given his extensive experience at luxury beachfront resorts around the world. He is a dynamic, proven leader who will do great things leading our large-scale operations at the Sheraton Waikiki.”

Calame has a degree in hotel management from MHS Heerlen University in the Netherlands, as well as a MBA from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom and is fluent in English, Spanish and Dutch.
