Originally constructed to connect isolated coastal towns between Torquay and Warrnambool, the road provides access to providing access to several prominent landmarks, including the Twelve Apostles limestone formations, Otway forest and surfing mecca Bells Beach.  Several sporting events are also hosted on the Great Ocean Road including the Victorian leg of the World Surfing League Championship, the Great Ocean Road Running Festival Ultra Marathon and the Great Ocean Otway Cycling classic.
