Canadian cruise specialist, One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) is proud to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its flagship vessel RCGS Resolute. On October 16th 2018, OOE known for its novel itineraries and immersive educational programs, welcomed the newest ship to their fleet in a recommissioning ceremony in their home port of Sydney, Nova Scotia.

“Introducing and recommissioning RCGS Resolute in her home port of Sydney, Nova Scotia was an important moment and extremely special occasion for One Ocean Expeditions,” says Andrew Prossin, Managing Director of One Ocean Expeditions and Cape Breton native. “The ship has had an exceptional year and has proven to be the most capable, safe and comfortable expedition ship in the industry.”

Notable guests at the recommissioning ceremony included the ship sponsor and Commissioner of Nunavut, The Honourable Nellie T. Kusugak, Rear Admiral Nick Lambert, The Honourable Alexandra Shackleton, Navy Captain Guillaume Lefrance (CD), Cape Breton’s Mayor Cecil Clarke, and John Geiger, CEO of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). The event also included a VIP celebration with an exclusive performance by one of the nation’s favourite bands, the Barra MacNeils, who later joined RCGS Resolute on the Canada’s East Coast ‘Fins and Fiddles’ expedition in July 2019.

“That day signified a great moment for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society,” said John Geiger, CEO of the RCGS. “As One Ocean Expeditions’ exclusive marine partner in education, environmental science, and exploration, we were thrilled to name a OOE vessel with the RCGS pre-fix. This is the first Royal Canadian Geographical ship to sail Canadian waters.”

Throughout its inaugural year, RCGS Resolute saw seventeen countries in thirty-two voyages, journeying to Antarctica, through the Chilean Fjords and the Panama Canal, into the Islands of the North Atlantic and along Canada’s East Coast to the Canadian Arctic and through the Northwest Passage. Over 2700 passengers experienced trips of a lifetime, with over 67,500 nautical miles travelled, crossing both the Arctic and Antarctic circles.

Designed for both exploration and comfort, RCGS Resolute is modern, well-appointed, safe and ice strengthened. The ship offers an array of premiere amenities aligning with OOE’s unique small ship programming, educational opportunities and numerous activities tailored to guests’ individual interests. The vessel is installed with a custombuilt science and research lab, the ‘One Lab’, an innovative 20-foot container equipped with state-of-the-art equipment providing an inclusive space for scientists to conduct their work in the isolated coastal areas explored. Marine mammal, microplastics and wildlife research was conducted in the lab throughout the year, and it was also utilized by an accredited university field school who travelled on the vessel.

Guests had the opportunity to learn from and interact with a range of special guests including Royal; Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) Fellows and Explorers-in-Residence, Wade Davis, Johnny Issaluk and Jill Heinerth as well as world-renowned scientists such as Dr. Ari Friedlaender and the team at the California Ocean Alliance, accomplished artists David McEown and Cory Trépanier and an impressive number of educators, researchers, naturalists, marine biologists, historians and photographers.

Currently about to kick off its 2019/2020 Antarctica season, RCGS Resolute will provide an intimate and engaging setting that promises to deliver memorable travel experiences to all its guests travelling with One Ocean Expeditions.
