Australians seeking new horizons to explore in 2021 can circle Canada’s wild island of Newfoundland as part of a new expedition voyage offered by Adventure Canada and Australian small ship specialists, Cruise Traveller.

The package includes a free one-night’s stay in the colourful port town of St John’s pre-cruise. Why not spend your day in St John`s exploring nearby Quidi Vidi – a fishing village with it’s own brewery where you can taste 10 award winning ales and lagers including their famous “Iceberg Beer”, or drop into the Plantation Village for handmade local crafts.

The 11-night ‘Newfoundland Circumnavigation’ package begins in St. John’s, Canada, on September 30, 2021, and includes one-night’s pre-cruise accommodation in St. John’s and a 10-night circumnavigation of Newfoundland – the world’s 16th largest island and bigger than Ireland but with far less tourists.

Newfoundland is a spectacular, wildlife-rich island off Canada’s east Atlantic Coast. The remote destination is one of the first places in the New World where Europeans settled, dating back to the 16th century. The island is famed for its fresh air, Viking history, year-round whales, spectacular hiking, the picturesque fishing villages that hug the rugged coastline and the friendly locals with their unique accent which blends Irish and North American inflections.

Culturally, Newfoundland is more European-focused with a rich tradition of storytelling and folk and Celtic music. Newfoundland is also home to three World Heritage sites – Gros Morne National Park, L’Anse aux Meadows and Red Bay National Historic Site – all of which are visited on this cruise.

Cruise Traveller Product Manager, Sam Patton, recently visited Newfoundland: “On a cruise to Newfoundland we wandered around St John’s and what stood out to us was not only the bright coloured houses and gardens but also the impossibly friendly locals.  We were frequently stopped on the street by friendly locals wanting to strike up a conversation.  It took us 20 minutes to put our hand luggage through the screening at the airport as the guard wanted to know all about our trip, where we were from, what we did, and at the end, invited us to come back and visit with him personally on our return!”

The travel package features a 10-night circumnavigation of Newfoundland aboard Adventure Canada’s 198-passenger, eco-friendly vessel, Ocean Endeavour. Highlights include a traditional ‘Mikmaq’ welcome at Miawpukek First Nation Reserve and hiking at Gros Morne National Park, a geological phenomenon where the Earth’s mantle protrudes through the Earth’s crust. The itinerary also features a visit to the restored, 1000-year-old Norse Settlement of L’Anse aux Meadows – the earliest evidence of European presence in North America.

Before returning to St. John’s guests, will visit the French territory of Saint-Pierre. Located off the coast of Newfoundland, Saint-Pierre is the last bastion of France’s colonial presence in North America. Boasting bright colourful buildings and winding narrow streets, the town offers a small taste of European living, with French shopping, bakeries, fine wine and cheeses, quirky cafes, and fine dining.
