Codeshare fever follows Qantas link with Air NZ

June 8, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Last week’s dramatic and unexpected codeshare deal between Qantas and Air New Zealand has been followed by a flurry of other codeshares between various airlines.

They include:

Virgin Australia and Hainan Airlines announced a new codeshare agreement for travellers flying between Australia and mainland China.

Under this new agreement, the codeshare will enable:

  • Passengers travelling from China to access an expanded network of Virgin Australia domestic connections within Australia and across the trans-Tasman, including Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland;
  • Passengers travelling to China to access a schedule of weekly Hainan operated services from Sydney operating to Xi’an, Changsha and Haikou; services from Melbourne operating to Xi’an and Changsha; and services from Brisbane and Cairns operating to Shenzhen;
  • Velocity Frequent Flyer members to earn Velocity Points and Status Credits and Fortune Wings Club members to earn Points and Status Qualifying Points when flying with either airline under the codeshare; and
  • Passengers to book all flights, including connecting flights, under the one booking, with a single baggage drop where permitted.

Qantas and LATAM announced a codeshare with LATAM to provide Qantas codeshare customers with more options to travel on LATAM operated services from Santiago to six destinations across South America.

The changes will see Qantas add its “QF” code to additional LATAM operated flights from Santiago on existing routes under the codeshare agreement, providing passengers with access to more flight times and more opportunities to earn Frequent Flyer Points and status credits.

Qantas and Air France to Singapore, Hong Kong and France.

Qantas has applied to the International Air Services Commission seeking to vary the following determinations to permit the utilisation of capacity for code share services with Air France, to Singapore, Hong Kong and France.

El Al Israel Airlines and carriers in Hong Kong and Poland.

Israel’s El Al (which already shares codes with Qantas) has announced a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines (HKA) covering connecting flights from Hong Kong to destinations HKA serves. The deal will include frequent flier club benefits and lounge access for El Al business class passengers at HKA lounges on that carrier’s network.

In another move, El Al and LOT Polish Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding for a codeshare, which will apply to at least one route operated by the two airlines. The announcement accompanying the signing said that the companies hope to tighten commercial ties between the two countries.
